Thinking it was wednesday at noon Pam wanted to eat a bite at the Dan's Sandwich Shop/Sandwiches Made Rite so off we went. She had the Chili Cheese Fries, I had the Chicken Tenders and an order of fries. Pam's meal was blah at very best, she couldn't even finish hers, I tried a bite and found it to be pretty much tastless. My Chicken Tenders were tender but had an after taste, made me wonder if they were fried in old dirty oil. The French Fries at the Sandwich Shop used to be wonderful, mine were noticeably a smaller order than in the past and quite blah and tasteless at very best. As shown in the photo I could only eat about half my order and I was hungry. The ladies at the table next to us were unhappy with their Maid Rites, telling us the meat was very greasy. I noticed not many customers were there, so thinking something must have changed since our last visit. We knew they had new menus printed since a new owner took over and went back more to what it was originally, then we noticed on those new menus a number of offerings were crossed out with a black marker. The very best part of my meal was that glass of water pictured. We likely won't ever be going back there, there's too many other better choices for our money, what a shame. I really hate to give a bad review but this one earned my icky-poo award.

A childhood favorite of my husband's, Dan's Maid-Rite has become a long standing family favorite when visiting Newton. The kids always request to go and grandma and grandpa are more than eager to comply! On any given day, you will see generations of families passing through its doors and if you're lucky, a greeting scribbled on the chalkboard from someone you've missed. I've been told the place hasn't changed in decades and in the 16+ yrs I've been acquainted, this has held true. The quality, deliciousness, and value of the food is steady as the sun. Not unlike your favorite broken in jeans, Dan's is worn around the edges in the very best of ways; comfortable, predictable, inviting, and just feels like home.

I liked the place. It had the perfect small town feel with your typical small town American food. The place was basically an open kitchen. The place looked sharp and clean when I walked in after the lunch hours. The maid-rite wasn't really flavorful; it required me to add condiments. It tasted much better when I added a little ketchup and some salt. Onion rings were good. Iced tea was also nice. Will return to try other dishes, like its chili, pork tenderloin and desserts, next time.

This is the #2 (franchise) Maid-Rite store in Iowa, sandwiches perfectly made as always. And...the pies are great! Pies are from All About Pies ladies, the cherry is our favorite so far, but the blueberry is absolutely the best anywhere. The Maid Rites are always our daily meal when we travel to Iowa. I would have given the shop 5 stars but the young staff needs to step it up a notch for improved customer service. "Taylor" is the exception, she's a great wait staff person, came over immediately for our order, sincerely friendly, gave us our spoons, filled our order quickly, she's a natural customer service gal. Dan and his pie-baking manager are sociable, keep a close eye on things, and run a high-quality shop. The Maid-Rite sandwiches are consistently made exactly right, a delicious return to tradition. We always stop in when...

Food was great as usual, its one of the last remaining old fashioned Maid Rites, and excellent home made pie BUT service? There was no service... The young girl clearly didn't want to be there, which i understand, there were 2 young boys there doing absolutely nothing but playing the whole time we were there. It would be my guess it was one of them that was supposed to make our fries.. because nothing was done about them until the girl did it after we already had our sandwiches. In fact, the sandwiches were gone and done by the time the fries came... there were a total of 4 employees, and my wife and I were the only customers, and they couldn't keep up.

We drive from Des Moines to go there. Maybe not a bunch more... but an original style Maid Rite...
