I ordered the tonkotsu ramen and a shrimp tempura roll. The ramen was underwhelming to say the least. Many places who charge high make their noodles in house but these were definitely some sort of instant noodles. The broth also seemed like they boil water and add a packet of dry seasoning. The pork belly was decent but also not the best quality. It was not tender and lacked flavor. Usually the ramen egg is good but even the egg was off, it tasted like vinegar. I have a feeling everything is made way ahead of time and refrigerated or put in vinegar to preserve it and it just gets heated up once ordered.
The shrimp tempura roll wasn’t bad but mediocre for a sushi place. For the price I’d rather get sushi from Kroger bc it’s arguably better.
I might be a harsh critic bc I travel a lot for work and have had really good ramen in LA and Chicago. I really wanted this spot to be good bc it’s near but it just didn’t cut it. I often hold back on writing a bad review to avoid hurting a business but the fact that they are charging more than places that actually make proper ramen is not cool. Just bc you’re in an area where ppl spend more does not mean you should automatically charge more. Don’t raise your prices if you’re not willing to raise your quality.
The only positive was the service. The gentleman who served me was kind and did a good job. I did not have the heart to tell him the food was bad bc it’s...
Read moreZen Ramen & Sushi may be one of the newest ramen restaurants, but they're by far one of the best in the Indianapolis area. I've had a lot of authentic ramen within Indy and outside of Indy, Zen Ramen & Sushi has one of the most flavorful tonkotsu I have had. Starting my dinner, I ordered the pork gyoza. It was different and awesome compared to any other gyoza I've had because they deep fry their gyoza. It was a nice change to have an all-around crispy gyoza. Afterwards, I ordered the spicy tonkotsu ramen. The noodles were cooked perfectly! All of the accompanying veggies were delicious and the pork chashu was nice and fatty with a good char to the outside. My favorite part of a good ramen, however is the ajitama or egg, it was a fantastic soft boiled marinated egg. Prices were pretty pretty in-line with any ramen shop in the area with a spicy tonkotsu being $15. Lastly, I can't say enough about the level of service. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and shown to my seat. Any questions I had they were ready and willing to answer and they brought all my food out promptly, but still apologized for it taking any length of time. I'm definitely going to be going back and would recommend anyone and everyone to...
Read moreEdit, 1 star thanks to food poisoning. I really appreciate that my kid is throwing up now. Thanks! How can you fail so badly? Maruchan with the flavor packet put the Tonkatsu to shame. Words cannot express how HORRIBLE this food experience was. The store is clean and simple. The staff was very pleasant, but inattentive. The noodles were like undercooked thin spaghetti noodles, flavorless broth. The ingredients were decent, the eggs ruined-obviously had sat out for a LONG time after being cooked. I have no clue how old the chicken in the picture was we literally cut it open.and couldnt find any meat in it. Yes that's the chicken?! This was the worst meal I have had at a restaurant in years, if not my entire life. $60 and time I can't get back! When I told the wait staff about the food, she brought me my check and made change. No attempts to remedy, or...
