Chelinos wasn't the only Mexican restaurant when we moved here but it was the predominant Mexican restaurants. There was some sort of niche/fusion stuff around but nothing the quality of Chelinos. Then Norman had an explosion of Mexican restaurants - they're on every corner! some of them are okay, a couple are actually good, Some I'll never trouble to step my foot in their door again.
But chelinos has really stepped up their game. They have some really delicious new menu items that are prepared exquisitely. it's not the fanciest restaurant in town but it's possibly the most colorful because all of the atmosphere comes from these joyfully colored decorations.
This restaurant has always been family friendly, and comfortable. It's a relaxed atmosphere the staff who work there have work there many many years, we're getting gray with them!We are always warmly welcomed and recognized and they speak to us every time we come in.
If you think Chelinos is just a fast food scuzzy makeover of Hardee's, you are seriously wrong. Come in on a Sunday afternoon when you have some time to sit and chat and visit with your friends and family and enjoy the delicious food maybe even have a cold beer. God drinks beer, it's okay. Check them out if you haven't.
UPDATE: Chelino's has moved to a better location and it is wonderful. Bright, festive, and now with a full bar. Food beyond delicious. Same staff, fine food, and a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. This family has been cooking exceptional food in the OKC metro area for about 3 decades. Newer, shinier, yet less authentic Tex Mex can be found all over town, but Chelino's will never let you down. Savor the relaxed atmosphere, excellent food, and enjoy yourself. No waiter standing near your table just waiting for you to put your fork down to whisk away your plates and shuffle you out. No dumbing down of flavors to satisfy inexperienced taste buds, and a wide variety of food. My husband and I ordered a single order of mixed fajitas, and ate well, taking home the remainder for another meal the next day. Give them a try. And if you used to go, visit the new place....
Read moreI will start by saying that this is (or was) me and my husbands favorite place to eat in Norman. We love their food and although we don’t eat out much… when we do, it’s rare we ever go anywhere other than Chelino’s. Tonight we had the strangest experience… I had surgery and only have 20% of my stomach.. I eat about two bites and I’m full.. sometimes I will order a full plate of food and take majority of it home for later and sometimes we will order a large meal and appetizer and share… tonight we were going to share a large plate.. we weren’t even going cheap.. it was a $35 plate… and the waiter was rude and said that if we were sharing he would have to put in for an extra rice and beans and charge extra because the rice and beans that come with the meal we ordered are complimentary but not if we were sharing. Very strange to us as that’s never happen before and also…. Whether we share or not.. the amount of food that comes on the plate doesn’t change so the price shouldn’t either… well instead of extra rice and beans I said I’d rather order and pay for something Al a carte… again.. we weren’t sharing to be cheap.. just to not be wasteful. so I said I would have a Chile Rellano… he said they didn’t have any chile rellanos at the moment.. so I said okay… I’ll order a flauta then… and he again acted like he had to “see if he could put in for just a flauta” I then pointed at the menu and showed him the menu clearly gave the option to get a flauta on the al a carte menu… he hesitated and then just walked away… at that point another waitress came over to our table as she could tell we were so confused at what just happen. We explained it to her and even she was extremely surprised at the things we were told and they were not in fact out of chile rellanos. Such a weird experience. We ended up canceling our order and leaving without eating. I’m not sure if we...
Read moreA friend took me to Chelino's mexican restaurant in Norman, Oklahoma on Sunday April 23rd, for dinner. I woke up the next day very sick & finally vomiting. I'm very healthy & rarely eat out. This was an early birthday dinner for me. I knew immediately I had food poisoning. I did call the restaurant & explained what happened. I'm very disappointed that the manager didn't ask me what I had to eat. They have offered a refund of the meal, yet my friend will have to drive from the city to retrieve it, spending more money. My health & my stolen day today is worth more than gold. I'm still not 100%. I'm reporting this so others don't get sick. I had a chicken enchilada & an avocado enchilada with sour cream sauce 2 sides of refried beans. In memory the waiter usually tells you that the plate is very hot & there's usually steam coming off. Also, my friend originally asked for a coffee but was told they didn't have any, even though he's had coffee there many times before. The waiter told us a joke about how we could meet him for breakfast at 6:30am, which I'm now extremely curious about under the circumstances & seeing how they are not open for breakfast. I really hope this wasn't intentional. The waiter actually offended my friend by continuing to call him boss instead of sir. I will no longer be eating at any Chelino's restaurants. I'm sad & disappointed that this happened, as my family has been eating there...
