Right, so... I haven't eaten here in years. But I was doing reviews and sod it, I'm going to do one on one of my favorite restaurants of all time. There's about 10 pounds of my girth that are the sole responsibility of this old beast of a restaurant, and it did my heart a little good to check and see that it's still kicking around.
When I used to come here, it was back when I was a student (like most of the clientele). Was on lunch one day, and someone said 'try it out.' I'd never had real gyro. Now I live among greek restaurants and diners that have these pressed pre-packaged ... things, and it makes me pine for the first day I walked into this little diner. I opened the door, and the aroma of the spiced meat as it spun slowly on rotisseries behind the counter made my mouth water and my eyes pop. I'd had what people called gyros up until then, and that day I had the first real gyro. I annoy restaurants where I live constantly by asking them if they do certain things because I'm picky about my gyros... why? Because of this restaurant.
You are not coming for gourmet fare. That's not the point. You're coming for fast, short-order gyro dishes prepared on a very simple menu for extremely reasonable prices and for a fast meal. That's what you're here to get, and you're going to get REALLY good gyro meat. It's the kind of meat that gets you addicted to mediterranean cooking. You learn to love the sight of the knife slicing jaggedly down the trundling bundle of meat as it sizzles. You learn to know the smell of it when it hits your nostrils. And you put up with the lines (because god but I assume there are still lines in this restaurant to this day. I used to wait 15-20 minutes for a meal in peak hours, but you never heard me complain.).
Keep in mind, and take this from someone who really did pack on 10-20 pounds in college by eating HERE specifically? You're going to want to watch how often you eat here. It's good food. The meat's good meat. But those portions are not light. But, if you like your meat savory and aromatic, and if you crave the taste of real greek street food? And you're in...
Read moreAs one of the pinpoint staples in the food and sub-culture of Norman's melting pot of individuals from all races, The Greek House still stands as a go-to for Normanites permanently residing in the bustling sprawling metro and has a coveted spot on Campus Corner. The food again is spectacular, I've been frequenting the restaurant thanks to my then wife who grew up barely a ten minute walk away from the location, and boy do I still owe her for the introduction. My favorite is the Dinner plate or not any less but lunch plate as well with pita bread fresh off the griddle, amazing salad with kalamata olives, red onion and feta cheese lightly coated in an unmatchable vinaigrette and olive oil, then topped with tons of delicious meat sliced less than four foot from the counter on stake burners, the French fries are an unnecessary but none the less delicious addition, you will get stuffed for less than $15 for dinner... That said they also offer domestic brewband dessert. The atmosphere inside is eclectic and reminiscing of the Greek Isles that the original owner would take his family to during the winter months leaving us to go without for over 45 days...They have since retired but the quality remains, the friendly family oriented business is quite possibly my pick for best...
Read moreWhen I first walked in, the cashier man was not too friendly, but I noticed that if you were a regular customer, he would be extra friendlier for the customers!! He needs to wear gloves if he decides to handle cash 💸 because the restaurant doesn't accept credit cards at all, only cash and at the same time handling 🍖 meat and carving the meats! I saw him eating the meat and not cleaning his hands next to the meat carving station! I think the price is a little too high, but I do admit that he knows how to cut and sliced the meat 🍖 very quickly and well !! The salad 🥗 needs more taste and too cheap one piece of olive 🫒 and feta cheese 🧀!!! The soda is all you can drink!! French fries 🍟 and the meat 🍖 are delicious and plenty of it better than any Greek restaurants that I had been going to in Houston, Texas! There's no waiters or waitresses there! The pita bread is not enough and too small for making gyros when you order a high-priced platter !! Parking is free but not enough parking and the parking in front of the store is absolutely too high and dangerous to reverse the car to exit out too high...
