My wife and I arrived about 1:35pm on Sunday and walked up to the attendant to be seated. She greeted us by asking how many and I replied two. She asked if we were going to order off the menu or wanted the buffet. I asked her the cost of the buffet and if they acknowledged bariatric patients by giving them any discount. She replied "What is that?" I explained that a bariatric patient is a person who's had a weight loss surgery which prevents them from eating a lot of food at one time. She said she didn't know if they gave a discount because she doesn't handle any money. However, she thought I would qualify for the senior citizen discount. She said I could go over to the counter where customers were paying their bills and ask the cashier about the other discount. After looking and realizing I would have to wait in line behind about ten people, I told her I would just like to look at the buffet to see what was available before I could decide if I wanted it or to order off the menu. As I started to walk inside, she stopped me and said only people who ordered off the menu could go inside. If we wanted the buffet, we needed to go back outside and walk around to the banquet room.
They had a cashier at the entrance to the banquet room. I asked her about a discount for bariatric patients and she replied they charge these customers the senior citizen price. She asked if we were paying by cash or card. She ran my card and enquired about leaving a tip which I declined. I prefer to complete my dinning experience prior to issuing a tip.
Upon entering the banquet room, we noticed it seemed very dated and definitely nothing extra to create a nice atmosphere. They had the remnants of a pig laying on a table. It was just scraps and when I got to my table and began eating, I realized it was cold. Along with the pig, I had a few shrimp, collards & sweet potato casserole. The shrimp and casserole were good. My collards tasted so bad that I kindly spit them out into my napkin. They may have been delicious to others, but were the worst I've tasted in a long time. I went back and got about a tablespoon of barbecue and wanted more shrimp but there were none. I asked an employee if they were going to replenish the shrimp and he said yes, at some time and he continued to sweep the floor. I sat at a table near the buffet for about five minutes before another employee came over and looked over the food and noted the items missing and left. After sitting there for another few minutes, another employee came to me and asked if he could help me. I told him I was waiting on some shrimp and he said "I'll get you some right now!" He left the room immediately and returned about two minutes later, made eye contact with me and held up a tray as he walked in my direction. I pointed to my table which was close to him and he sat the shrimp on my table and left. He told my wife that he was sorry we had to wait and to let him know if we needed anything else. I really appreciated his service! He was attentive and noticed I was waiting on food. He addressed my need immediately after I felt two others ignored me. Soon after, another man came in barking out orders about closing the buffet and closing a partition for a family or a group. I assumed he was a manager or some other high ranking employee until I noticed he was wearing flip flops.
The man who had previously got me more shrimp returned to my table and asked if he could get us anything else because they were shutting down the buffet. We said not but thanks for your service. When we left the room and were intending to give a tip, we found that the cashier and cash register were gone. I went back inside and asked a woman about tipping and she said the entire staff shares the tips. So I gave...
Read moreURGENT MESSAGE: We had the most awful, disgusting and disrespectful experience at Kings Barbeque in Kinston, NC. What in the world is going on in NC? I ordered my meal and it was not hot and the ribs tasted old. I asked the server for a hot and fresh meal. She took it back and the next thing I know, a white man came to our table, he yelled at me and berated me. He told me “your food is hot”, it is at 140 degree temperature”; and while walking away from the table, he yelled across the room and said “you are the only person in here that has a problem with the food”. He then proceeded to taste the food on my plate and made one of the female black servers taste it to confirm that it was hot.
Well, what happened next should be no surprise to anyone that knows my husband. He asked loudly to see the manager and was informed that that the white man who was at the table was the owner. My husband told him that he was disrespectful to me and that it was unnecessary and talked to him the way he talked to me.
The owner told us “the customer is not always right”. By that time, Ira was at the kitchen door and the unhinged owner got in Ira’s space and Ira told him if he touched him, it would be a problem. He backed up and began mocking Ira because he couldn't handle Irra standing up to him. The manager tried to scare us off by saying that he was going to call the police which he did. He told the police that Ira was trying to physically assualt him which was a lie. We waited for the police to arrive and while they were talking to us, the owner came outside trying to flex again stated he wanted us banned from coming to the restaurant. I can not make this up!
The rude, unprofessional and disgusting behavior was extreme and uncalled for. We will NEVER patronize Kings Barbeque ever again!
We are how we allow people to treat us! It appeared that the owner has never or rarely had black man challenge his behavior. He was too comfortable with talking to us as black people like he was our “master”. I think he will think twice about how he handles the next black person. I'm also sure that situation will be the talk of the town. The other patrons, who also happened to be white, were shaking their heads in disbelief at his behavior and confirmed to the police our story. We are headed back home to Maryland. Praying for safe travels! Whew!

Kings BBQ was a huge let down for our first ever visit. We walked over to her from the truck stop after viewing all the reviews and we'll honestly it was not good at all.
We walked in and were greeted right away and then sat down in the main dinning area. We looked at the menus and decided within just a min or two what we wanted right away. About after 10-15 min we finally get our drink order done and following of our drinks our meal order in.
My wife and I are huge BBQ lovers. Myself being a meat smoker and bbq conisur decided for us to try the baby back ribs. We chose coleslaw and potatoes salad for sides.
The meal was promptly served within just minutes to us. The slaw appeared to be minced, the potato salad look to be typical southern style. The ribs, well they looked terrible. They were greyish in color, watery slurry sauce on it and not even sticking to the ribs.
Our first bite was into the slaw and good lord it was pickling our mouth from way too much vinegar. We had to add sugar to it to take out the acid in it.
Next up was the potato salad, this wasn't bad and actually was the best thing we consumed from Kings(Jokers).
Now let's go to the ribs,we took our first bite and wow was it flavorless. There was zero flavor into the meat at all. These ribs were not smoked at all. The meat was tough/slightly chewy off the bone. The sauce on the ribs was not bad but was so watery it just rolled right off the slab of ribs.
This was a huge plate of DISAPPOINTMENT!!!
When the server return to check on us I asked her if the ribs are smoked and she said no,she even admitted that the ribs are terrible there and are flavorless.
She told us they are cooked on the flat top grill. Now why on earth is a so called BBQ place serving ribs from a flat top grill ? This is seriously false advertising calling yourself BBQ.
They have pictures of Martha Stewart eating their chicken. I can't imagine why ? I guess if your a former prisoner it would be considered good compared to prison food perhaps ??
I would strongly advise not to come to Kings (Jokers) fake BBQ restaurant. You would have more BBQ and smokey flavor from the deli counter at the Piggly Wiggly next door.
This place gets 5 out 5 Gracie plops!
Congrats Kings BBQ you've been...
