First, let me say that this review of Ruby’s Bagels is L-O-N-G overdue. Not long after they opened, but for at least six months now, my wife and I have been patronizing the Ruby’s Bagels near the intersection of Montague Ave. and Dorchester Rd.
Since I am the “early-riser” in our marriage, I am the one tasked with the “bagel runs” whenever we are in North Charleston. Ruby’s Bagels is located only about a mile from my Dad’s house, which makes it a convenient & quick spot to pick-up something for breakfast, as opposed to picking something up from a traditional breakfast restaurant that always ends up being cold by the time I get back to the house. As a walk-in customer, I am usually in-and-out within minutes.
My wife’s go-to bagel is Blueberry, while I have tried the French Toast and Cinnamon Crunch bagels; both good, but with a slight edge to the Cinnamon Crunch. My last trip to Ruby’s I opted for the Cinnamon Raisin bagel, and I would have to say this is my new favorite. Like the website says – a chewy center and crunchy exterior . . . Delicious!
I have been consistently impressed with the level of service and the friendliness of all the staff of Ruby’s Bagels, but I have to single-out Sam Spence for making sure I leave a happy customer with a bag full o’ bagels!
I grew-up in North Charleston but left when I joined the U. S. Air Force right after graduating from high school (Garrett, if you gotta know). Over the past 40-plus years, as I have returned to North Charleston to visit my Dad, I have seen many changes in North Charleston (some good and some bad). I see the decision by Ruby’s Bagels to locate in North Charleston as an incredibly positive sign of their faith in the community. During our monthly trips to the Lowcountry, I never fail to patronize Ruby’s Bagels, and I sincerely hope that locals will embrace this small business. Definitely go for the bagels, but don’t be surprised if you make a new friend behind...
Read moreIt was already an early morning when I stopped by getting off a 24hr duty day. The last time I visited, I ordered a sandwich that’s typically served on a wrap, but the woman who helped me kindly accommodated my request to have it on a bagel instead. This morning, I decided to reorder the same sandwich with the substitution. However, the cashier had an unpleasant attitude, responding curtly that the sandwich comes on a wrap. I politely explained that during my previous visit, it was made on a bagel without issue.
The cashier then turned to the cook and asked, “Are we putting wraps on bagels now?” The cook nodded and replied, “I’m ready to stir the pot this morning.” As the cashier entered my order, she was noticeably snippy and dismissive.
As a customer, I don’t think this type of conversation should take place in front of me, especially in a service environment. I was genuinely excited about my order—after all, this is a bagel shop, and I would’ve expected them to accommodate such a simple request. Unfortunately, this experience left me disappointed, and I won’t be returning to this...
Read moreIt can be tough to find a great bagel around here. These are the real deal! Chewy toothy exterior, soft but compact middle, just absolutely perfect. And HUGE. These are the bagels you dream about. I generally order a mixed 6 and every kind I have tried has been better than the last. The Plain, Egg, and Everything are must-haves.
I usually make my own sandwiches with them, but ordered hubby a sausage, egg, and cheese on buttered Plain toasted this weekend and it lasted him 2 meals and he was as happy with it as if I had made it myself. I had smoked salmon in the fridge so ordered an Everything toasted with extra cream cheese, capers, and onion and put my salmon on. It was heavenly!
To preserve their freshness, I slice them in half and bag them individually to store in the freezer. Remove to the fridge the night before or simply thaw with the bag open on the counter for an hour or so, then toast. As fresh as the day they were made. These two will be topped with scrambled eggs and cheese for brunch. I can't wait! Ruby's, I'm your...
