The Bar — Restaurant in North Haven

Right near my workplace...And we like it,so we go often. BUT...It's not PERFECT... Got a steak and cheese sub. One word you definitely don't want to associate with a S+C sub,is GRISTLE. A lot of it. Thinly sliced steak,NO gristle,is kind of a rule. No? Threw half the sub out. One hiccup. Otherwise the food is always good--We usually go two or three times a week. The clientele can be strange. (A North Haven thing?) One day,there was a Huge party- 15 people at least. They had pushed several tables together,right in the middle of the dining area. Like it was THEIR house. No room for people to get by. (They were in between the entrance,and the bar area. We like to eat in the bar area.) My girlfriend and I SQUEEZED by,and some of them actually gave us looks like WE were the rude ones...In their house. Staff eventually moved some other tables,so CUSTOMERS could walk by. Shoulda been done FIRST. A while later,I went to use the (One-Person) restroom. Walked in the UNLOCKED door,and a guy's standing there peeing! Hey Dude,there's a lock on that door. Use it. I wasn't surprised to see he was a member of that big rude party. Staring. Rude,right? Sometimes it can even mean a problem,or even lead to a fight...So why do people stare in this place? Not always...But regularly,about 1/3 of the time. I have a feeling that if the locals see anyone they don't recognize,they don't like it,and don't know how to behave. More likely,they DO know how,but CHOOSE to be rude and (Try to) make (Unwelcome) people uncomfortable. "Their" house,after all. Good place,overall. The staff was friendly and professional. The service was good. I got one slice of pizza and stopped in there because it said New Haven style pizza. If you want New Haven style pizza you have to go to New Haven. Everybody tries to imitate it but they never do a good job. This pizza was okay they had a very thin crust around the edges and the middle of it was sort of mushy. There wasn't much on the edge to be crispy like New Haven pizzas. You couldn't hold it with your hands and eat it without it all falling all over the place like New Haven pizza. The tomato sauce was not fresh like New Haven pizza. The mushrooms that they added to my slice were fresh and tasted good. But the sauce and the crust was not. I always like to patronize places that are local that have good pizza but I'm hard-pressed to call this good. Well I was eating it I was hungry but I was thinking that I should have gotten a frozen pizza from Stop & Shop it would have been better. To the owners and the staff I apologize that this is not the best review but maybe you can use it to improve your pizza and you will stay in business for a good long time because there's a lot of people in our area that like pizza. I will not lie and tell you that it was good when it wasn't. For the reasons that I mentioned above this is why it wasn't good. People in this area know good pizza and if your pizza isn't good they won't be back. They will try a new place once and maybe even twice but after that if your pizza isn't good they will not feel...

Absolutely loved this place & wish I lived closer or had one near me!!! I was playing in a women's soccer tournament in this area & one of my teammates picked this restaurant for dinner. I admit I was somewhat skeptical about going to a place called "the bar" for dinner! Boy was I ever pleasantly surprised!! The food was exceptional, and the bartender (we sat at the tables by the bar) was the best!! She was super helpful, patient as we walked in as a very large group w/o reservations, and had a wonderful demeanor! I'm Italian and tend to be somewhat picky when it comes to Italian food, but their pastas were awesome, their bread before the meal was to die for, and even their little cannolis were better than ones I've had in both Boston's north end or providence's federal hill!!! -I almost feel blasphemous saying that but it really is true!! I wish I had bought more to take home with me! I'm just so sad that we don't have a restaurant like this one near me. So if you're anywhere in the vicinity of North Haven CT, I highly recommend that you stop...
