We tried this place on 7/12 at lunchtime. We were shown to our booth and didn't even sit down and the water, chips and salsa were being set on the table. The place wasn't very busy. Our waitress was very nice and attentive and gave us the time we needed with the menu and asked if we had any questions. The music coupled with the acoustics was perfect. I have trouble hearing in loud restaurants but my wife and I could hold a normal conversation.
The food was super. My wife ordered the cheese fries with bacon and the California burrito while I had the Elote bowl and the Chipotle shrimp. For my meal I really like the Elote and the only down I can give it is I would've like a little more seasoning. My shrimp was great. I love Chipotle shrimp and order it at any restaurant that has it on the menu. This became tied for number 1 of all the places I have had it. I could tell from the first bite that the shrimp were as fresh as you can get in Iowa, which is to say they don't use precooked. The flavor was a little different than I have had before, there was a surprising and pleasant citrus flavor that really made the dish pop.
My wife's cheese fries were very good and a huge order for an appetizer. That burrito was also very big and not just filled with the usual filler. She had the Steak and there was plenty. The flavor of the steak was very well marinated.
The atmosphere was pretty cool as well. The Xolo dog motif was so neat. I actually had to look up the different background of all the murals and what the actual Xolo dog was and where it came from.
If you go here be prepared for a cool experience. Don't get in a hurry because it did take awhile for our food to be delivered. Just remember, great food is not fast and fast food is not great. The food, service, and atmosphere here are all great. And a special shoutout to our waitress Yaire, she was so geat and personable she made the experience even better.
We will definitely tell our friends about this place and we...
Read moreVery unique update to a prior mexican resturant. Open concept and very friendly staff. The night we were there the resturant was very busy and our waiter said they were understaffed. He was very good but definitely over whelmed. We ordered spicy margarita and a pineapple margarita. Both drinks where fresh slightly strong. The pineapple margarita was very good the spicy margarita had an earthy taste and was not our favorite. We ordered fajitas and a chicken pork carnitias dish with cactus and beans. The fajitas where very fresh with the chicken and shrimp perfectly prepared. Plenty of fresh veggies as well. The chicken pork dish was outstanding with chorizo that had rich flavors. The steak on both dishes were the weak point. Tough and chewy. The cactus had no flavor. We both enjoyed most of the meal and the waiter was very good. This is a new restaurant I think they need to adjust a few things and would be worth a...
Read moreA friend and I went to Xolo for dinner on a Friday evening. We arrived around 6:30 pm, which I understand is a busy time, and we were seated within about 10–15 minutes. The staff seemed to be working hard, but it took another 30 minutes just to get our drinks, and we ended up waiting more than two hours for our food. Unfortunately, this was the slowest service I’ve ever experienced, and I don’t think I’d recommend this restaurant.
The margaritas were $15 each, price not listed on the menu, and honestly I could have got a much better margarita for less elsewhere. The staff offered only a brief apology for the delay, with no effort to make it right. As someone who worked as a server for years, I would’ve at least comped a drink or dessert after such a long wait.
In total, my friend and I were there for nearly three hours before we finally closed out our tab. I wanted to like this place but I will not be...
