I really, really, hate that I have to write this. A little background: I live in Indianapolis and up until this last year 3 Floyd's, could not keep up with the demand of the Indy market. The only day of the week I would leave for lunch was on Fridays, because I knew there was a 80% chance the local liquor store would have received and unpacked the recent shipment from 3 Floyd's. Like clockwork for the past 2 years I have been using my lunch hour to buy beer.
Fast forward to the present- I was surprised to learn we had a client that needed some assistance in Munster and I happily volunteered to visit the town knowing I would have the opportunity to visit the place that makes my Friday nights a little more enjoyable.
It was 8pm on a Wednesday and the parking lot was packed. I walked inside, starving, and after the very long day I had was ready for my well deserved reward. The hostess greeted me and was very friendly, and asked how many people would be joining me. I replied I was bty myself tonight. She promptly grabbed a menu and without saying a word, started walking to the only open seat at the bar top. There was a reason the seat was open as there were two very large guys on both sides of the open seat, and at 6'1 230, I'm not a small guy either. Seeing this, knowing I would rather eat alone, in peace, after my long and stressful day, I asked if it would be possible to sit at one of the 15 tables that was open in the dining room. The hostess, all of a sudden, looked at me like I had leprosy and said " well I'm not really sure if we can do that. " They (as in wait staff) really don't like it when I seat one person at a table". Shocked that she just implied the reason she was trying to squeeze me into a seat that wasn't suitable for the average sized 9 year old was simply about this evening's tip outs I couldn't do anything other than just stand there like I had been slapped in the face. Seeing this she replied she would take the initiative to ask them if it was ok to seat me in one of the many open tables in the dining room. Feeling like a little kid whose puppy just ran away, I told her thanks but no thanks and walked out.
I don't know if I was felt so deflated because I was really looking forward to visiting my favorite brewery, or maybe it was because walking into a crowded bar in a strange place is awkward enough or maybe it was because the hostesses reaction made me feel I wasn't welcome in a place that I welcomed into my home each week and created a tradition around for the past 2 years. Whatever it was, it left a very bad taste in my mouth and I'm currently accepting applications for a...
Read moreLet me start off by saying that I have been here many times over the years and attended their annual Dark Lord Day a few times and have never been disappointed. Always have fantastic brews and there food is outstanding.
I was just there this past weekend (8/23/15) and the day started out well enough. We arrived just before their 11AM opening and had literally no wait to get in. Three of us traveled over an hour to spend an afternoon here for a few drinks and to catch up. After I had four beers, and the other guys had two each, they cut us off. The waiter stated he could not serve us any more beer but we are welcome to order our meals if we'd like. Keep in mind, we had not been being loud, obnoxious, or disrespectful to the staff or any other patrons in their establishment. We agreed that we would order our food, enjoy our meal, and be on our way. About ten minutes later, the waiter returns with our bill, slaps it on the table and says "Your food is being put in to-go containers, you need to leave." and walks off quickly. Confused as to what and why this had just happened, I brought the bill (which was over $200) to the hostess and asked if we could have the food charges removed as we hadn't even got out order and were already being asked to leave. He said he would talk to the waiter and see what we could do. Less than 30 seconds later, four to-go containers and a lady (I assume was the manager on duty) arrive and demand payment. When I questioned the manager about why we were being asked to leave, she just continued to say we need to leave. Nobody had an explanation as to why we were being sent on our way in this manner.
Was it because we had been there for an extended period of time? There was no wait for seating and we weren't wasting any ones time with a bill over $200.
Was it was because they decided we had too many drinks? Maybe they should set a limit like Solemn Oath has in their taproom (3 beers per person). Even at that limit, only I had one more and the other guys hadn't even had that many.
Needless to say, after this experience you can bet I will not be returning. It is a shame that the brewpub staff is as inconsiderate as this to long time customers and risks losing more if they keep it...

I stopped into 3 Floyds last year after hearing about it numerous times from colleagues in Northern Indiana. I first went there during the day to scout it out for a business dinner, it just happened to be quieter while I was there. As luck would have it, I met Dave at the bottle shop. He let me know that Bend Both Knees APA was being taken out of rotation so I was able to get a few bottles of that and LazerSnake.
I came back later to have dinner, and what a change when the bar is full. The music is non-stop mind-numbing Death Metal and it's cranked, so be wary if that not your cup of tea. Its a good thing this is a brewpub since when people have a few beers in them they tend to speak louder. After a while, the music really isn't an issue. We were served by the lovely girl you wanna take home to meet the family, Morgan a Goth Goddess. She was funny cool and a great server who took very good care of us, and helped our table with the food offerings. My choices that night were The Elote or Mexican Style corn, the insanely good burnt ends, and the phenomenally tender smoked Pork loin. I can't even remember what beers I had but since I wasn't driving, I went for flavour and strength with my selections. The Elote was a great little refreshing dish, the burnt ends were well, burnt, but only slightly on the outside for flavour, and the smoked Pork lion was perfect, as it is lean meat, but slowly simmered so as to keep the moisture intact.
Three Floyds is legendary, and I'm kicking myself for not going sooner. I've been to a few of the local brewpubs and they all have their uniqueness. I do recommend the beer and the food and be wary, it's loud at dinner but that doesn't stop the place from...
