The presentation of the food masks the absence of flavor. To start, we tried the beignets. They were perfectly golden on the outside, and the Foster's sauce they topped them with was really good. Once I bit into the beignet, I was immediately disappointed because it was raw and undercooked. The server said that it's supposed to be "spongy", but that's false. Beignets are supposed to be fluffy/airy and delicious. The beignet they served was not. Perhaps the oil they fried them in was too high. It has potential if it's cooked thoroughly.
As for the breakfast, I ordered the chicken and waffle, a side of grits, red potatoes, and a cup of fruit. The fruit was fresh, and the red potatoes were seasoned well enough. The grits had decent flavor but were undercooked - I shouldn't feel the grittiness or feel a crunch when eating grits. The biggest disappointment was the chicken and waffle. The chicken was a thin sliced breast. I ordinarily wouldn't take issue with this, but it was REALLY thin, almost as if it was a third of a full breast instead of a half. To boot, it was utterly flavorless. I could not taste any pepper or garlic powder. It was flour and meat, and the taste of oil. It's a good thing they added the red hot honey on the side, because it's required for any semblance of flavor. The waffle seems to have come from a pre-made mix and flavorless and was rubbery by the time it got to the table. Syrup was whatever generic syrup that most coney islands use - it was familiar but boring and uninspired for a place that calls itself french toast bistro.
Lastly, the server walked to the table at least three times and did not refill the water glasses when they were empty. The only beverage I had was the starter glass, and the melted ice. I've never had to ask for a water refill, and certainly was not going to do so here.
Would I come back here? Maybe so if I was invited by someone to meet there, but I don't think I'd plan to...
Read moreOkay even despite the one hiccup I am giving French Toast Bistro 5/5 stars! IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING GOING, GO!
My fiance and I drove up there today from south of Detroit. Pulling in it's located in a strip mall that was pretty much empty (yay tons of parking). The outside is not a display of what is to come I promise.
Upon entering we were met with a beautiful interior and a really friendly hostess. It was a little loud but it was busy, so pretty normal. We had a fifteen minutes wait but only wait six minutes (second yay!) ♥️
The menu was a good size. Tons of French-Cajun foods that all sounded (and smelled) AMAZING. Several items immediately caught my attention. The Baked French Toast, Biscuits and Gravy, Breakfast Corn Dog, BBQ Benedict, all three kinds of mimosas, and the Baked Brie all sounded to great. I decided to go with the BBQ Benedict and the Tropical Mimosa, and I can honestly say this is a decision I do not regret in the slightest! The Tropical Mimosa tasted like someone mixed a Malibu sunrise and a mimosa. Perfect! The coloration was beautiful and the size was good! The BBQ Benedict was hands down the best brunch meal I've ever had! It was cornbread topped with BBQ meat, a poached egg, spinach, and hollandaise sauce. Though on the colder side (my fiance got hash so I know his took longer to make hence the no biggie there) it was absolutely amazing. The sweetness to the BBQ sauce, the tenderness of the meat, the side dish (red potatoes) were cooked to perfection, and the hollandaise sauce, oh my god the hollandaise sauce, was HEAVENLY. The portion sizes were amazing.
The server, Melissa, was so friendly and went above and beyond for each guest she took care of. The team work and work chemistry between her and the bartender was amazing to see. Honestly every part of this visit went above and beyond. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. If you are...
Read moreAtmosphere was a wonderful mixture of warm homey vibes, with a touch of upscale class. Quality of Food certainly met expectations, having heard of this eatery for quite some years now. I wonder how I went so long having not stopped in for a visit before‽ I don't usually go so far as to truly criticize the food, beyond it's edible quality. Taste is subjective. What I may find to be too rich or spicy, another person may find perfectly appealing. With that said, I was a little taken back that the potato cake, ⟨one single cake goes for $⁵·⁰⁰⟩, when we went to review the contents of the order, I personally originally mistook the potato cake for shredded hash browns! løl It was tasty, but not consistent with what I would consider a "potato cake" in the traditional sense. It wasn't one cohesive cake by any stretch of the imagination. I feel it was missing something. But that's merely my humble opinion. And where that item lacked, the rest of the order was totally to par. Sunday brunch was insanely busy, but the service was prompt. The staff didn't appear to skip a beat or miss a single addition & substitution. Parking lot available spacing was challenging. Parking was a challenge but we visited during the brunch rush... Irregardless, if it hadn't been for another patron leaving the lot, we would have had to double park on the street and risk a parking ticket. Yikes! Total bill was reasonable for the service & quality & amount of what it was worth… albeit, not your typical run of the mill diner, it was on the higher end of what you can expect to pay for eating out these days {but certainly NOT over the top, or unequivocally priced}. I recommend this location. And I look forward to visiting it again in the future to sample their evening fare. ፠
