Would not recommend anymore. I always tell my friends to come here and try it out and we come often to support local. Wont be coming back anymore. Went down today to get food traveled from Westside and while we left heading there we tried to call our order in at 4:10ish. Phone keeps ringing and nobody answering. We called about 20 times if not more. At one point they turned off the phone line so nobody could call (Prob picked up land line and left it open). We arrived at 4:40 and they said they were closed the "OPEN" light was turned OFF (before their closing hours at 5pm). Luckily the door was still open I went inside and tried to order food they said they don't have any food and they closed already. I asked why couldn't they answer the phone and let their customers know you guys are closing or leave a voicemail recording saying closed so nobody wasted their time and money to drive out and support local. All 3 young kids in the place did not care at all. Would hate to be the owner of this. I dont think the owner cares I see now more reviews about how everyone has problems with this place and the workers. Will never support this place again. When I left there was a guy and his friend who also said they came from west side and they both tried to call here a lot and nobody answered and when they came here one of the friend got what ever random food they had and the other guy they didn't have food for him. Answer your phone or dont even have a phone number I dont care how busy you get keep this attitude up you will be closing down the place like every other food location thats getting smashed by inflation/recession.
I would rate it 0 stars if...
Read moreWe recently had a destination wedding in HI and despite covid resulting in a canceled reception, we still HAD to have food for fam, friends, and vendors to take home with them. So what better place to get some excellent take-out plates than KJs?!
We ordered 40 furikake chicken regular plates, with mac salad in separate cups so it could be refrigerated until the ceremony and pictures were over. All 40 plates were gone by the end (and we technically only had 20 guests+vendors lol).
The furikake chicken is a local fav. People drive from the other side of the island JUST to get this! Strips of chicken, breaded and fried with furikake (dried seaweed+sesame+salt) all over, completely soaked in their amazing secret sweet soy sauce) The flavor drips and covers the generous scoops of hot rice under it and the macaroni salad is not your regular mac salad - they use spaghetti-ish noodles and have tuna mixed in with their mayo base along with some simple spices/flavorings. It is DIVINE.
More than 15yrs ago, I remember driving w high school friends to KJs and grabbing plates to go when we hung out at the piers to do late night fishing week after week. Their food was delicious and amazing back then... And it was delicious and amazing years later at our wedding
If you ever are on the island of Oahu, definitely take a drive to the windward side and stop by KJs for some awesome, timeless local grinds. Always cooked to perfection and you can bet the quality will be consistently epic Thank you, KJs, for being a huge highlight of...
Read moreI lost count of how many years we have been eating here. Let’s just say that I remember when the mother and grandmother was working here and I would pick up dinner before heading off to night classes at WCC around 1995. The service since then has really dropped off. Which is really disappointing.
Today’s experience: • There was no sign that they were closing early. • First we tried to order chicken but that was sold out. That’s fine things run out that’s understandable. • Next we asked if we could get extra scampi sauce if we ordered the shrimp, we said we understand if we have to pay more. We were then told that only get what is in the pan. So this got me wondering if they cook it ahead of time and keep it in a pan because on a previous visit the shrimp was really dry. Suffice it to say we ended up not ordering it. • They ran out of rice but didn’t tell people that already placed their orders that it was out, they only told those that came in later after they were done ordering that there was no rice but they could have two sides. So my wife didn’t know she wasn’t going to get rice because the workers didn’t say anything to her.
Also of note: • They no longer serve breakfast anymore which is sad because the rope sausage was really good. • They no longer sell musubi which is sad because the hotdog one was...
