Zippys, Honolulu (Kahala Location), HI
Under non-covid restrictions Zippy’s was known as a locally grown 24-hour eatery and late-night hot spot which currently has had its hours and dining options curtailed, but undoubtedly still remains a particular island attraction. For locals across the Hawaiian islands, it is said that potlucks will always include at least one Zippy’s item, which will no doubt be either their unique and flavourful chili, or something from the in store bakery which offers up some amazing treats. From inside and observing the crowd (that seemed to be mostly locals), I'm sure that most could easily be able to tell you their favorite dish from this iconic diner. With locations on Maui, the Big Island, and all over Oahu, you're sure not to be far from an opportunity to try them out. The menu at first can be somewhat overwhelming by way of choices and selections. Zippys claim to fame is that they have embraced the evolution of Island style comfort cooking, which is a hearty hodgepodge of various cuisines from pacific rim countries and cultures amassed over various periods of past Hawaiian history. To be honest, I would not say that the specific items fully embraced from these various cultures could be classified as healthy and sometimes rather enigmatic, but I would say there are many things that are just outright delicious. One standout and somewhat of a local legend is the Chili. Ask a local about Zippy’s chili, they’ll quickly be able to tell you their preference of original, no bean or vegetarian. The recipe was created by the café founders back when it first opened in 1966, and today, they sell over 100 tons of chili each month. The signature dish also makes its way into some of the other menu items like the chili omelette, chili frank plate, chili moco (a take on a loco moco) and the chili burrito. Personally I thought it was delicious, the really unique qualities were the almost creamy silkyness and a sweetness that wasn't overbearing but definitely opposite from a true Texas style chili. Aside from the Chili, Zippys breaks the menu down into Specials, Daily Plates, Burgers & Sandwiches, Noodles & Soups, Sushi, Breakfast and Bakery. Specials and Daily Plates are exactly that, specials are available until they run out (some as early as 10am) and Daily Plates vary, by of course, the day! Everything on the menu is available throughout the (operating) day which currently varies from location to location due to staffing etc. or until it runs out. The fact that you can have pancakes, eggs and sushi with a side of Chili anytime is definitely a huge plus in my book (not to mention most items come in multiple size options!). Zippy’s is definitely a go to option for those who are looking for a hearty Pan Pacific Denny’s- esque influenced meal, with both take-out and indoor dining available. Due to Hawaii Covid restrictions, be sure to call ahead to verify if indoor dining is available at the location you plan to visit. Staff and atmosphere are friendly and inviting with some of the best value for dollar...
Read moreZippys is a Hawaii staple: which is the problem. They've become such a household name that they can basically charge whatever they want, and people will stay pay it. Don't get me wrong, the food is good (most of the time), but it is incredibly overpriced for what you get. Sometimes your food tastes fresh, sometimes it tastes like it's been under a heat lamp all day, particularly the fried chicken. Prices have gone up, and the sizes have gotten significantly smaller. There's local style plate lunch places with better food, bigger portions at a better price point.
All Zippys locations are cookie cutter, but I'm particularly not a fan of this one. One of the best things about Zippys a few years back was it was open till 2 or 3 am. Since under going renovation, it closes much earlier. Service has always been okay in the take-out and restaurant. The area around the restaurant attracts a bad crowd, though. You'll commonly see meth heads and homeless in the area. So be wary of your surroundings when parking and...
Read moreA tradition for any local wanting good food made the way only Zippy's makes it. (First stop after getting off the plane!) I love the loco moco and mushroom burger. My 13 year old likes the Portuguese bean soup, my 9 year old enjoys the Teri burgers, and the youngest loves their famous chili! Don't forget to grab a custard filled Long John from Napoleon's bakery before you leave! ONOLICIOUS!!
**NOTE * AT THE KANEOHE LOCATION, ON THE TAKE OUT SIDE, IN THE SEATING AREA WAS AN UNACCEPTABLE INFESTATION OF GERMAN COCKROACHES!!! Crawling under the tables, along the walls, out of the floorboards, around my feet.....everywhere!!! I was so grossed out, plus threw out the bags I had brought into the restaurant with me for fear of the nasty buggas stowing away into my car. -Health Department has been contacted and this location has...
