This is our go-to place for special occasions when we want to stay close to home.
I read some of the 1 star reviews complaining about the inauthentic-ness of the food. My response is that I wouldn't come here for authentic Latin American food. There are plenty of places across the city at cheaper price points for that.
I put this, instead,in the higher-end, Latin American -inspired food category. For me, the food is strong, made with quality ingredients and served with plate appeal in mind. I usually get the fish tacos, which come with home-made, thick ply corn tortillas, which I like. Other taco options are also good.
Drink menu is competitively priced with other restaurants in this $ range. I'm not a dessert guy but the ones I've had are pretty decadent. Wait staff is usually attentive, leaning toward eccentric, which I also enjoy, and they don't stink eye you if you stick with just tap water on occasion.
The best thing about Maya is the restaurant itself. It has great spaces, each of which feels almost like a different restaurant. The main room features a glowing 3-sided bar and lambent oil paintings on the walls and TVs trained to ESPN (a detail I appreciate). An adjoining room offers a bank of cozy booths that are great for tying a few on with friends. The backyard patio is awesome. It bustles during the summer, so best to book a reservation early. Happily, outdoor dining at Maya runs well into fall. I've actually had hot toddies by the fire pit on a couple Halloweens, with a complimentary horse blanket thrown over me for good measure as the church bells from St. Edmunds toll spookily in the distance.
In summary: For $50 out the door you can have a nice meal and a few drinks in a fantastic, lively space that stacks up well against other high-end spots that charge more. I enthusiastically recommend it if you're looking for a special...
Read moreWe visited this establishment for the first time on Friday, November 21, 2019. Our reservations were for 7:30 pm. My Step son came into town and we took him there to celebrate his birthday. My husband had the fish tacos, which he said it was delicious but he wishes they would have served that with rice. My step son had the chicken enchiladas and I had the Carnes asada with fingerling potatoes and broccoli with panela cheese. I could not finish my steak so my step son had part of my steak and ate some of the panela cheese, my husband did eat some of the steak but nothing else. We left after paying the bill of $115.00. Our server wa excellent., However soon as we left heading home to Berwyn, I started feeling ill, I barely made into the house and started vomiting profusely, sweats and diarrhea that did not stop for 4 hours. Soon after I was sick, my step son was in the downstairs washroom having the same symptoms. We did not have any alcohol. My husband called the restaurant immediately, and they said they would get back with us. No one has ever called to check on us? I felt like I cracked a rib, my throat was so swollen and I laid in bed all weekend feeling horrible. I believe it was food poison and they only real thing we all had together that made us sick was the panela cheese, I went to the VA to be checked out, and they believe that I had Listeria Monocytogenes that is in types of Mexican cheeses and there is no way of knowing until you get ill. I think what I am most upset about is that we lost the whole weekend with our son as he left on Sunday, and it would have been really nice if the Manager would have called us back or offered a percentage of the $115 I spent and disposed of it within 15 minutes of my meal. So be careful of...
Read moreI am 38 weeks pregnant and one of my best friends and I wanted to go somewhere close to the area that had outdoor dining. Maya Del Sol was the only local restaurant that had outdoor patio and took reservations. We couldn't make reservations through open table, so we called instead. This was the first outdoor dining experience one of my best friends had since the pandemic and she felt very comfortable.
It is located in a downtown/busy area (to me). They do have street parking available with meters or the restaurant offers valet at a charge. The decor and ambiance from inside to outside is very modern and cozy. As you can tell from my pictures, I loved the light fixtures. This is a great place for a date night or go get together with some friends. On the outdoor patio, they had the nice string lights and they had fans to keep it cool.
Leo was our waiter. He was very friendly and attentive. He explained to us the menu and that it was Latin American infused. Of course he saw that I was pregnant and he let me know what virgin drinks/mock-tails we're available. I did try the virgin margarita because he mentioned margaritas is what they are known for of course I miss the alcohol but it really was delicious!
They provide you with complementary chips and salsa which the salsa was very good. My best friend is a vegetarian so we ordered their Mexican eggrolls, vegetarian enchiladas, and the plantains with mole. Each dish was very good and flavorful. Also beautiful presentation. Leo was very kind to spilt the enchilada order for my friend and I without us even asking! I do wish there was more of the ingredients inside of the vegetarian enchiladas. If it was meat I feel it would have been...
