Me and Jungle Cafe — Restaurant in Oakland

WARNING: Yes it may be cute inside but if you are Black and/or Plus Size, this is NOT a safe space for you!

At first, I really liked the vibe of this cafe. Its become one of my favorite wfh spots. I also really like the club sandwich. Even the folks working behind the counter are so nice with great customer service.

My only issue is with the woman working behind the counter who I think may be the owner (she had her kid with her). After having my meal, I went back up to the counter to order some tea and before I could even say a word, she says "I hope you're not thinking of ordering more food". For context, she is asian and I am a plus size Black woman and what she said felt very fatphobic. It was a complete shock to hear so I asked her to repeat herself and she said it again jokingly. She tried to play it off like a joke but I can tell she meant it. So I decided not to order anything else and returned to my seat. I think after taking to the other lady she knew what she said wasn't ok because she tried to give me some free tea to try to smooth it over, but it also felt hella racist because she offered me Watermelon tea to try. I turned it away and she offered me mint instead again no I don't really want anything from you. Honestly, the only reason I didn't curse her out was because her kid was right there. It really is a shame because I actually really liked this cafe and its so cute but the anti blackness and fatphobia I experienced was not ok. She didn't even apologize...

Me and the wife went for brunch and got a latte and snack. The lady at the counter handed me the bill as I made the order. She handed me the bill and I put zero as the tip, as I was planning to leave cash tip on the table after our meal. As soon I put zero on the tip, the lady’s behavior at the counter changed. When she brought us the latte and snack, I said thank you as she placed the items on the table but she completely ignored us. My wife noticed that she was smiling at other guests and greeting everyone else. When we were leaving we said thank you again, loud and clear, but she was unresponsive to us again and completely ignored us.

One should not be judged by the amount of tip you give. We paid for our meal and were very nice to the lady. If I was an owner I would have not changed my behavior and acted rude just because someone put less tip or no tip. Instead I would still greet them or take care of the customer the same as the others. I wouldn’t want to lose my customer over a tip. This was our 2nd time at this place, but we will not be coming back due to this unresponsive and rude behavior. Everyone’s situation is different on how much someone can tip or can’t tip. A smile and good greeting customer service goes a long way.

It’s disheartening to experience such a drastic shift in service based solely on a tip. Good customer service should be consistent, regardless of the tip amount. It’s unfortunate that a small tip or no tip can lead to such...
