The food selection here varies and the hours are unpredictable. The banana nut bread used to be fantastic, but now the quality has fallen off, which is ridiculous because banana nut bread is one of the easiest things to bake and make consistently regardless of where you are (at altitude or below sea level and regardless of any supply chain, ingredient availability issues, etc...). A 3-year-old could make banana nut bread taste better than the last batch I had there.
The prices are a bit high considering the available selection and quality of items, but they aren't ridiculous. The nice thing about this location is they do have parking and it's right off the main road if you're trying to grab a snack on your way in or out of town.
Bottom line is ... expect all baked items to be a bit dry and overcooked. The cupcakes and cookies are not nearly as delicious as they look. It would be nice if they had fresher or healthier options to go in the refrigerators full of items already packaged for the road.
And be prepared for them to close early or be out of stock of a lot of items. My hunch is the owner and/or manager needs to spend some more time there for quality control and to figure out what is and is not selling and why. They underwent a large renovation during Covid and as far as I can tell, all they did was create more of a store front for their bakery and good items, yet the quality of food seems to have dropped in recent months.
If you're desperate for something sweet, skip this place and head down to the waterfront. There's a great candy store near the children's store that's been around forever. They serve real root beer floats and the staff/owner are awesome. And they're always open regardless of the season. It's on the water side of Mill St kind of near the VFW (but on the other side of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreUsed to come often when it was, Momās, so this year when I decided I didnāt want to do too much baking, I immediately thought to buy my pies here.
My parents are older (dad 84, mom is 70-something (lies about age often lol) but wheelchair bound) and mom doesnāt like coming outside much, so I decided I would make a Thanksgiving dinner for them plus one for my immediate family.
I went on Saturday 11/18 to buy slices of the pumpkin and sweet potato pie to sample and after we collectively taste tested, we decided on the pumpkin.
I went back to the bakery on 11/19 to purchase. I bought two apple and two pumpkin pies. Spent over $100. The young lady who rang me up said not to refrigerate them (something to do with other items in the fridge altering the taste, I wasnāt really sure but, sheās the expert, not me!) and they would be PERFECT come Thanksgiving day, so I brought them home and put them on the counter. Didnāt think much about themā¦
Itās Wednesday and I am just finishing up my parentās meal to deliver to themā¦I grabbed two of the pies and to my shock and horror, the pumpkin pies have mold spores on them!
I called the bakery and was told that pumpkin pies always need to be refrigerated (NOT what the cashier told me!!!) but the apple pie should be okay.
I cannot in good conscience give my parents a potentially moldy pie, nor will I give that to my immediate family, so I have to toss all four pies. Thatās over $100 down the drain.
Now I have to go get Mrs. Smith pies or see if one of the grocery stories has pies that I can give my...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreSo I heard about this wonderful little gem through a friend of mine. I can't believe I have missed out on this place for so long! I went in with an open nose and an empty belly. When I tell you the customer service is on point, I mean it. These people were super patient and ready to help at a moments notice. The variety was absolutely like nothing I've seen before. I seriously recommend getting yourself some of the sour cherry pie! I ordered the Boston cream for the wife and myself. I have ever had such a creamy and soft textured pie. I highly recommend you come here if you're ever in Occoquan. You won't regret the pit stop, but you will regret missing out on the best lie...
