Loved ordering off the regular menu but their shabu shabu/hotpot needs just a little more meat for costing $17.99. I don’t have pictures from that visit unfortunately. I’m not a fan of the shacha sauce due to it’s fishy flavor. I love seafood but this is one of very few flavors I’m personally not a fan of. I got the non-spicy broth and it was ok but I think could have used just a little more flavor as it was very subtle. We make hotpot at home and have had it in Taiwan and other local places but everyone does it their own way. The variety of mushrooms and etc. were great though and their staff refill the broth for you as often as needed which is great. We got an order of the Taiwanese Sausage Fried Rice to go and it was delicious. We have been wanting to eat it every day since!! I have to give them 5 stars for awesome service, and friendly staff and the food is really good. See my previous visit details below.
We initiated my first visit because I had a hankering for Taiwanese sausage. I first tried Taiwanese sausage in Taiwan shortly before the pandemic so it had been over a year since I had it. I have been hesitant to buy it in stores here in fear of missing the same delicious, sweet flavor and peculiar texture. So I opted for the Taiwanese Sausage Platter as pictured. My husband got the beef noodle which is a favorite of his to get in Taiwan as well and we shared a side of marinated eggs which resembled tea eggs. I love to make tea eggs but theirs are served with fresh green onions and a brown sauce that’s really good. I tried the beef noodle and the broth was delicious, beef was tender, and noodles cooked perfectly. Let me get back to my Taiwanese Sausage Platter though... it really satisfied my cravings and because of that we went back exactly a week later. It came out hot and everything was fresh and I loved the variety that it came with.
There was an older gentleman that made a point to chat with us when we had hotpot and was so nice. We really enjoyed that about the second visit.
Bottom line is; great staff, delicious and authentic Taiwanese dishes. Like others mentioned, food comes out fast!! We are going back again very soon! We can’t wait to try more dishes.
Notable edit as of November 2023: They have high chairs but there was no baby changing station in the ladies room. This was unfortunate as I had to change my daughter’s soiled diaper on the bathroom floor. Luckily I had a travel changing mat to put down but it was tough. I have RA so it was really difficult and we weren’t in a situation where we could wait to change her elsewhere.
Also the food was different this time. We got some of our usual dishes (beef noodle and Taiwanese sausage platter) and the broth was different and the tofu on the platter was much spicier than all the other times we have gone. It was still delicious,...
Read moreIf you are looking for authentic Taiwanese Cuisine in St. Louis then i highly recommend checking out Tai Ke. Hidden away next to Dao Tien is a simple restaurant, with an open kitchen that allows you to watch them make your food. Having been here two different times I highly recommend getting a bunch of dishes to share, becuase there are a lot of great items to choose from, although for this review I am going to focus on my second time eating there where I didn't go family style.
Now this menu might have what I consider to be a dish that is one of the best deals in all of St. Louis which is the braised pork rice. You get a sizable bowl filled with rice and topped with pork, daikon and a soy braised egg. The pork is cooked really well and the little bits of fat throughout the pork add a nice savory flavor. The rice soaks up all of the juices from the meat and is a perfect saucy bite. I also ordered the three cup chicken which is chicken cooked with soy sauce, garlic, basil and other herbs. Now although I thought the flavors of the chicken were fantastic, I was not a fan of the large amount of bones in every piece, making for a difficult eating experience and that being the reason I bumped Tai Ke down a star.
Being that Taiwanese food is not something I am familiar with, it helped to have the guidance of my friends as well as yelp reviews to navigate me through this unfamiliar menu. Be adventurous and try different things on the menu and you will be pleasantly surprised in the new...
Read moreI spend 50 dollars for three dishes: Oyster Omelette, Braised Pork Rice and Stick Rice Cake. All of them are extremely disgusting and unsatisfying!
Oyster Omelette have smashed pieces of shells inside for the first bite, instead of common tasty egg Omelette you could enjoy a mix of water with starch which having no flavor except the scent of over dated seafood. I bite for the second time to give it a chance, then it go inside the garbage bag. Anyone who is willing to try a good version this could ask me about a recipe that all materials will cost 5$, easy to bake and 100 times delicious than this piece of garbage.
Braised Pork Rice is unlike any other same dishes you can see in different restaurants. The small portion of size and the tiny amount of meat will make you doubt the price of the product. At first taste I know this dish came from refrigerator and served through microwave, which is acceptable for a cheap price: however it wasn’t.
“Sticky Rice Cake” seems to be a sweet flavored rice cake made with stick rice, but it is not the case. First, it’s not sticky rice, second, it’s not a rice cake. It is a chunk of normal rice mixed with soy sauce, pressed in a cup, pour out pretending to look like the shape of a cake, then sprinkle some ketchup and dry meat floss on top.
If anyone is looking at this comment, please know that past positive comments for this restaurant can’t be considered now, since the owner of the restaurant have been changed last year and the quality of food dropped...
