Drawn to Dinker's because of its local history. It was established "in the heart of Sheely Town", a small largely Polish settlement in the late 1800's of which my great-grandfather had been Mayor. I thought it was so cool that this place was still around, and I was intrigued by the mural on the outside facade and the claim of "Omaha's Best Burger".
Easily seen from the interstate, it seems oddly difficult to find exactly how to get there, but GPS took the mystery out of that for me and I had no trouble. For a random Thursday night, this place was packed! Pretty cool to see, really. Seating was confusing. Do I seat myself? Open seating? I couldn't tell, but asked another diner who explained it is open.
I sat for several minutes alone looking over the menu (already on the tables) before someone came to ask if I'd been before and knew "the process".
Orders for food placed at the back of the restaurant. Orders for drinks placed at a separate bar, and everything is cash only. Eeek! Thankfully, they have ATMs inside, or my visit would've been for nothing.
I had a cheeseburger deluxe, which included lettuce, tomato and mayo. It was good! I thought the chips (Ruffles have ridges!) were a little disappointing, but the amount of food seems plentiful for the price.
This is a fun place to try in a historic Omaha neighborhood. I had hoped for a bit more history than the outdoor mural and mention on the menu. Pictures from the early days on the walls would be a nice touch. But, all in all it was a great place and I'm...
Read moreGreat dinner spot!! My boyfriend & I stopped overnight in Omaha on a road trip to Colorado, and decided to eat here based on the good reviews it had. I had the cheeseburger & fries, my boyfriend had the hat trick burger & fries, and we split some mozzarella (cheese) sticks.
We both agree that the mozzarella sticks were delicious! I thought my cheeseburger was tasty. My boyfriend liked his hat trick burger as well. The fries were crispy and medium-thick, and were also delicious!
The process to order is a little confusing (but worth it still!): you go the whole way back to the counter on the right (almost to the entire back of the store), order there (they only take cash—but there is an ATM in the restaurant), and then you order all drinks from the bar (including non-alcoholic beverages). At the food counter, they give you a number for your table once you order, and it was self-seating after that. It was fairly busy, but we found a table just fine. The food came out quickly and was nice and hot. The staff was extremely friendly and great to explain how ordering worked!! A few workers periodically came to refill our drinks and take away finished plates/baskets.
From the outside, Dinkers really doesn’t look like much BUT I couldn’t recommend it enough if you’re looking for a delicious meal at a good value, and an easy-going, laid...
Read moreDinker's has been voted the Best Burger in Omaha many times. I haven't eaten at every burger place in town, so I won't go out on a limb and say they're the best, but the burgers we had were really good. Enjoyed both the Steak House and the Hay Stack Burgers. Both were cooked as ordered. You can tell the meat is high quality, low in fat because there is barely a trace of grease on the bun or in the basket. Personally, I like the flavor a little more fat brings to a burger, but again, that's just me.
Fixings on the burgers were fresh and tasted great. Onion rings were actually onion strings and a bit greasy, but tasted very good.
Wings - classic Buffalo wings (boned and no boned (not on the menu)) were a bit hot for my mouth, but I'm a wimp when it comes to 'hot' sauces. The home made Ranch was good for dipping.
Both the gizzards and Rocky Mountain Oysters were flavorful, meaty, and no buried under a lot of fried coating.
Some things to know before you go - Cash only. There is an ATM in the bar. Street parking only. When you walk in start looking for a table and grab the first available, then round up your orders and send someone to place them. Food will be brought to your table.
An Omaha classic for sure, with very good food, really quick kitchen (place was full with March Madness games on...
