The promise was tantalizing: unlimited sushi paired with tableside hand-squeezed ice cream, all under the banner of "Japanese Fusion" along Orange's restaurant-dense Boston Post Road. Guji's substantial brick facade, illuminated by dramatic red awnings and professional exterior lighting, suggests serious culinary ambitions beyond typical all-you-can-eat operations.
Inside, curved LED ceiling installations and contemporary high-top seating create an unexpectedly sophisticated environment. Multiple screens display menu items while an open sushi bar provides dinner theater. The space feels more gastropub than strip-mall sushi joint, with outdoor dining capacity that signals year-round commitment.
Sadly, the signature ice cream experience proved unavailable during my visitâa significant disappointment given its prominence in Guji's marketing. No opening specials remain, leaving diners with the standard $30.99 weekend pricing for unlimited access to an ambitious menu spanning traditional sushi and hot Japanese preparations.
The sushi execution proves surprisingly competent. Specialty rolls arrive with genuine artistry: tempura elements maintaining proper crispness, spicy mayo ribboned with restraint, bonito flakes adding both visual drama and umami depth. The fish quality exceeds expectations for the price pointâsalmon showing proper texture, tuna displaying respectable color depth, while uni hand rolls suggest willingness to stock premium ingredients despite volume constraints.
Hot dishes validate the "fusion" billing. Tempura work demonstrates actual technique: impossibly light, grease-free battering on both shrimp and vegetables. The tonkatsu sports proper golden panko crust requiring skilled oil management. Most intriguing are the stuffed mushrooms swimming in glossy amber sauceâcreative kitchen work that transcends standard Japanese-American offerings.
Traditional accompaniments receive proper attention: pickled ginger maintains appropriate bite, dual soy sauce service includes specialty blends, while wakame salad arrives jewel-like in speckled ceramic bowls. These details suggest kitchen respect for fundamentals often overlooked in volume operations.
Service excels beyond all-you-can-eat expectations. My server checked in five or six times throughout the meal, anticipating needs without hovering, and processed the final check with impressive efficiency. This level of attentiveness elevates the entire experience considerably.
At nearly $40 with tax and twenty percent tip, Guji's value proposition shifts considerably. The missing ice cream component stingsâboth as promised experience and potential differentiator from area competitors like the acclaimed Wasabi or established Sushi Palace chain.
Guji succeeds as elevated all-you-can-eat dining, offering genuine kitchen skill within unlimited constraints. The space feels substantial, food quality exceeds category expectations, and menu breadth accommodates varied tastes. Yet without its signature dessert innovation, Guji becomes merely very good rather than truly distinctive.
For hungry suburban families seeking quality exotic food without premium pricing, Guji delivers admirably. The restaurant's ambitions remain evident in both execution and environment. But until that promised ice cream materializes, Guji feels like a concept still searching for its complete identityâimpressive in parts, incomplete as...
Read moreStarted off well, got seated and served our drinks fast. My husband and I both ordered the seafood boil along with some appetizers. There was some confusion with the seafood boil paper and let our server know that we wanted 2 orders of the same boil. She wrote 2 down on the paper for us. The appetizers came out first and they were great (sushi/gyoza/shrimp). Then only 1 seafood boil plate came out and we waited 10 minutes for the other, that did not arrive. We let our server know that we didn't recieve the second one and that we would just like to keep 1 at that point, especially because it (the garlic butter boil) was ridiculously salty (which i did not complain about). After letting her know we did not want the second boil, she walked away immediately without asking if my husband would like to order anything else instead. He waited a while for her to come back, and when she did not return and there were no workers in the area, he had to grab his own paper to be able to order more. She finally came back and grabbed the paper, only for the wrong orders to come to our table. He had to flag her down again for assistance, and at this point she seemed irritated (i do not know if she was irritated with the kitchen, or with us for simply asking for the correct items). We finished the rest of our meal, VERY ready to leave at that point. When we were paying, she very rudely SNATCHED the check book out of my mother in laws hands and walked away very fast. We will not be coming back. We drove an hour and a half for this and were left very dissapointed with the service. The tables are a bit too small in my opinion. Most of the food...
Read moreClearly, this is a place to get good sushi. The variety is wide, with both traditional options and creative rolls you donât see everywhere. Pricing feels fair given the choices and freshness. The food quality itself is excellent: the salmon was especially fresh, the mango was notably sweet, and the Fruits Roll stood out as unusual, refreshing, and absolutely delicious with its fresh fruit inside. Definitely a highlight!
If I had to mention some minor areas for improvement: the dĂ©cor doesnât really give off a Japanese restaurant vibe, and there wasnât much effort to create that atmosphere. Service was a bit slow and not always well-coordinated, and the food presentation (both sushi and kitchen dishes) felt a little hasty at times, without much attempt to style the plating in a Japanese way.
That said, the sushi itself was fresh and flavorful, the ingredients were clearly of good quality, and the overall taste was...
