Abroad is a nice idea, an eclectic selection of dishes from around the world from a couple who apparently settled down here after traveling around the world - see their pic behind the bar. The decor is also very charming- a very cute place to spend an hour or so. Unfortunately their apparent inexperience in restaurants shows at most every turn. We arrived at about 5:30 p.m. to order 5 take-out entrees - we were confused when we were told we couldn’t sit at a table as we waited - more than a dozen tables, everyone empty - not a single customer yet and they were “concerned” that a our seating might take space for a customer!? We sat at the bar and ordered cocktails and chips & salsa. The cocktails were good but the bar tender (female owner) was incapable of making a drink and small-talk at the same time - each time she spoke she turned away from her small task leaving our group amused and slightly thirsty. We knew that chips & salsa are usually complimentary, but cost $6 here - so we were not surprised by the fact we were charged, but were surprised by the tiny portion of chips and tasteless salsa. Our 5 entrees were way overpriced and ranged from average to absurd. My pad thai was below average - too dry. Pad thai was $18 but $27 for the standard “shrimp pad thai” - 3 small shrimp, ridiculous. The salad portions were also tiny and expensive ($12 - see pic). The tofu kabobs however were absurd (see pic - this is how it came, untouched - I called and asked the owner if I could send him a pic - he said no, his phone was broken). Two small pieces of tofu on a stick for $12, no flavor, no sides, we paid for that rice. $182 for our 5 unsatisfying entrees - way way overpriced. When we left the restaurant had 2-3 tables, more than ten empty - not sure why we couldn't sit down!

This is — and I say this with grace — the worst place I’ve ever eaten in my life. Abroad is an eclectic collection of global cuisines that have somehow all been botched. And by “botched,” I mean no amount of calling these dishes “fusion” can spare them from being utterly disrespectful to their original cultures. It is disingenuous to call these dishes “tapas” when they’re really just overpriced, underportioned, and bland renditions of something the owners ate one time when they maybe visited a particular country. Chinese 5-spice tofu isn’t supposed to be oddly grainy with an overwhelming taste of cinnamon. A quarter-cup of “pho” shouldn’t come with a handful of bell peppers inside. We were so utterly disappointed with the portion size, flavors, and price of our meal that the 3 of us (from different countries!) left and got food from a gas station instead. After eating here, we checked out other reviews — which we should’ve done beforehand. While the concept of this place is cute, the execution leaves much to be desired. We were pleased with how kind our server was, but not much else. Seeing defensive comments to low reviews is disheartening and reflects a lack of desire to improve the food/product quality at this establishment.

Had a wonderful evening exploring a potpourri of flavors and excellently prepared dishes this evening. Abroad excels in bringing a variety of options to fit both our pallets (me a more traditional New Englander and my wife from the Caribbean!). After studying the menu a bit (lots of unusual sounding names) we easily found a set of 6 small plates to share that were foods we like but in temptingly interesting spices and preparations (lamb, pork, scallops and others). We’ve always loved tapas restaurants (also small plates) so this format was one we enjoy (3-4 small plates to share, per person in your group). Abroad, though, is not confined to Spanish cuisine and instead draws from Israel, Ireland, Asia, South America, and brings an authentic taste of each to the Cape. Some are spicier or more seasoned than others, as per the custom for that cuisine, and some may associate that with saltiness. Instead we found a variety of tastes that we’ve experienced at various restaurants in NYC or the Caribbean. A lovely, professional and welcoming staff, and a winning menu, at an affordable price (6 small plates between the two of us came to about $30 each, plus drinks). We will definitely be back!

What a welcome variation and dining experience Abroad bings to The Cape. I have been coming to Cape Cod my entire life and the moment my family walked into this vibrant, fun and eclectic space I was hopeful that the menu would match the environment. Well....WOW...it was superb!

We started with scallop ceviche that was colorful and layered with flavor much like the space we were sitting in. The following tapas style plates of - skewered Jerk Jamaica Chicken, 5 Spice Chinese Tofu and Moo Ping alerted the tastebuds with every bite. It was a visual and flavorful journey around the globe. The Jerk Chicken almost had a candy flavored finish, the tofu was spot on with its layered spices and texture then the skewered pork was a bountiful pleasure to the tastebuds yet again. The vegetable fried rice was pleasantly spicy and the Chicken Pad Thai was exploding with flavor. The owner recommended having a fried egg in the morning on top of our leftover vegetable fried rice and I cannot wait to have that in the morning!

The staff was attentive and informative making this meal a top notch stop on our visit.

We cannot wait to go back and enjoy this flavorful food and fun eclectic environment again. What a welcome addition to The Cape dining experience. This restaurant would compete with any of the inventive and top rated restaurants in Cambridge or Boston.

Keep up the excellent work at Abroad you have an amazing...
