Another tale of sad but true. A great American dining experience tucked away in a little corner of Florida, easily missed if you blinked too long as you drive by, not realizing the injustice you’ve just done to your taste buds… Next time you’re in Florida. Slow down! Then make a full stop at Heffers diner. I promise you, it’s worth the stop. The food is honest, delicious, and reasonably priced. The coffee was hot and fresh, the iced tea was freshly made, the lemonade was delicious. Every plate of food we received was basically perfect. Now, if you’re interested in the rest of my thoughts, then keep reading.
This is one of those places that Gordon Ramsey would probably not approve of based solely on look. He’d likely have something snooty and stupid to say about the location or decor that never makes any sense to normal people. BUT… when he tastes the food, he won’t be able to say anything else because his mouth would be full for the rest of time. Unable to speak, trying to understand the flavor explosion happening in his mouth.
Funny as that would be to see, I can’t speak for Chef Ramsey, but I can for my family. We’re on vacation and looking for breakfast locations near the hotel, and like most people, our search was based solely on ratings and food reviews. After all, we’re not Floridians and we don’t know anyone down here in the Daytona area to ask opinions or get recommendations. As of July 2025 the ratings on this place is 4.6. I hope it goes up to 4.9 in the near future. I know it will never be 5.0 because there is always that one guy, that one Gordon Ramsay wanna be, that one person having a bad day, you know that one guy is going to leave a not so nice review because they had a bad day elsewhere.
I ordered the country fried steak and eggs because it’s my go to breakfast, and I have a very high expectation for my country fried steak and eggs. Until today, Bob Evans had one of the best country fried steak and eggs. But not anymore. Heffers country fried steak and eggs made Bob Evans version suddenly seem like improved cardboard. The steak cut was tender and well seasoned. The gravy was spot on. Even the darn eggs tasted better. It honestly made me question whether or not the other places I had country fried steak were even using the right recipe. Also, when it comes to breakfast, the only drink for me is coffee, and the coffee here was hot and fresh. Not too strong, not too weak, just right. Somehow, they managed to have the Goldilocks of coffee. I would tell you what my daughters, wife and my mother’s opinion of their food was, but I can’t, because their mouths were stuffed the whole time, smiling as they mumbled and munched along. Their orders included, Mexican omelette, pancakes, grits, scrambled eggs and cheese, and it was all gone with smiling faces.
When it comes to food, my family is unforgivably picky and finicky. It is exceedingly rare for them to finish entire meals. It is even more rare for them to mention return visit to any food place. That happened today. My family will dislike entire restaurants based off a single item of food. Bad pancakes, unseasoned fries, or even drinks that didn’t meet their high standards. So, when they leave arguing about when they will come back, says a lot.
There is something on the menu for everyone. And I’m pretty sure if they don’t have it, they’ll put it together and make it for you. Do yourself a favor. Slow down, sit down, and enjoy probably one of the best breakfast in...
Read moreWalked in and was met with an awkward glare from the old grumpy waitress who apparently wanted to make clear she didn't like me or my family. Southern hospitality isn't what it used to be i guess, or it just gets old and bitter. She stood there staring at us so long with her mouth dropped open...we had to actually had to break the silence to ask her if we sit down or wait to be seated. During the course of our meal she was slamming various items down on the table in front of my children in some sort of lazy psychotic trashy temper tantrum. Her behavior was beyond asolutely shameful! The fake reviews must keep them afloat so well that they can alienate potential big bill customers...because the food was so nasty it made everyone sick, aside for the little one who barely touched her meal. I honestly don't mind paying a little more for good food....but our best breakfast the whole trip in Florida was at waffle House with a young enthusiastic server who was smart enough not to sabotage her own tip + the food was higher quality and 2/3 the price. What's the point in supporting mom and pop establishments if Mom and Pop are going to glare at you with disgust for walking in with a friendly smile? Then disgust you with their food. I fear these little places I've once felt lucky to find are all but disappearing.... And being replaced with poor imitations like this. Half the clientele looked pretty rough lol, so i couldn't imagine what the heck her hang up was all about. But there's certainly no doubt where the...
Read moreI wanted to say I never usually complain about my bad experiences at restaurants I usually just don't go back. However I am in customer service and sales my self and I went in to Heffer's 603 S Young Street In Ormond Beach...this morning with a friend of mine to have breakfast, I ordered my food and when it came back to me i notice it was wasn't what I ordered so i said to the waitress Michelle I did not order this and her words were "that's what you ordered that's what you get" which I thought was rude but being in customer service if someone told me there was a problem with something wether I made the mistake or they did I would make it right. well I did not say anything else my friend said ill give you mine and we switched food. So a few minutes another waitress walk by so I told her what happened and she replied that's what you get and started yelling across the room to the other waitress that I said she was rude... with customers in the restaurant I said to my self wow. she kept on about screaming in the restaurant that she doesn't need my business i'm not a regular to them and that go ahead write a revue about us and she has been in business 14 yrs and doesn't need my business.. and then I walked out with out eating and left my friend in there because I was upset and she made her pay the 20 check with us not even eating.
