Negative 3 stars. We have been having Korean food since before we were married 26 years ago, and have been going to Chosun occasionally for some years since they opened, though we do prefer Choga. Chosun's customer service is mediocre, even for Korean food, but their food is usually good. For our anniversary, we decided to go for Korean and ended up here. After waiting some time for the waitress, another table was waited on AND served before us. No biggie, this is the week immediately after Christmas, and it seems somewhat busier than usual. We order 2 appetizers and our entrees, mine being dol sot bibimbap, which I always get a raw egg with. Due to health codes, they apparently can no longer do that, so I ask them to throw it in at the end and stir it around. No go, so it comes with no egg at all. At this point, we don't have apps, nor kimchi, so we ask. She says they forgot to fire them, which I'm guessing she just didn't put in, since she didn't write anything down. Ok, mistakes happen... the kimchi plates consisted of teeny portions of sliced hotdogs, a potato with mayo and regular kimchi from a bottle, none of which I touched, though I usually love kimchi. My husband's octopus has, no joke, 20 or more slices of JALAPEÑOS, seeds, membranes and all. He usually hates to send food back, so instead wants to ask for rice. I nicely motion for the waitress twice, in part because we are both completely out of water, and in part because his lips are bright red. So while she is yet again tending to the Asian customered table that went first out of order, I ask a little louder to get her attention - nothing crazy: "excuse me miss?", to which she responds "oh my g*d, you need to wait!" She comes over, and not wanting to make a scene on our special night, I don't say anything. He asks for rice... she leaves and doesn't come back for a good while. Brings rice and water. We never see her again. 2 guys come in her place and try to smooth things over. No apologies. She could have just said "one minute, please." The replacement staff could have said, "I'm sorry, here's a coupon, one entree free," something... since it was obvious that some kind of conversation had taken place. I've never been treated this way by wait staff, as I try to be a good customer, and even leave plates arranged so they are easy to haul. We always tip well, and ask for things politely. Needless to say, we won't be going back, especially since from other reviews the staff and obviously, the food quality has taken a dive. They ruined our anniversary....
Read moreI was in the area with a friend who had been saying for days how much she wanted Korean food so we made a stop here on Sunday around 2pm.
As of now, there only seems to be three Korean restaurants of note and all of them in the Shawnee Mission/Overland Park area. We wanted to try Sobahn, but they're not opened on Sundays and I just envision Mrs. Kim from Gilmore Girls saying - NO. Go away.
So we tried Chosun instead. Only Chosun and Choga seem to have actual grill tables. From what I can tell Sobahn cooks all the food in the back, which for me takes some of the fun out of Korean BBQ. Although, if you're doing lunch and don't want your clothes to smell of pork and beef that might be a decent option.
When we arrived there were only 4 other tables seated. There are about 4-5 six seaters along the wall when you enter and another 8 four seater grill tables along the far wall. There are also booths and tables without grills. When you enter there's no host stand so you kind of just have to wait until someone sees you to be acknowledged and seated which on a busy night could be awkward.
We decided to order the Combo 4 with bulgogi, beef brisket, pork belly and pork shoulder. The bulgogi and shoulder were marinated, the brisket and belly were not. It came with romaine lettuce, garlic, a gojujuang sauce and jalapenos. A basic but tasty lettuce salad started it off and when the meat arrived so did the banchan. I have to say the banchan was a little disapointing. There were only 5 options.
When I do Korean BBQ in LA or Chicago there's at least 8 or more different dishes. This is Kansas City, but still a bit of kale, 3 small broccoli florets, daikon kimchi, cabbage kimichi and some kind of hot dog kimchi don't really cut it. Where are the pickles? Where's the tofu? A missed opportunity I think.
The meat, however, was a good quality and the grills worked really well, giving a nice char to all the meat. I had to turn it up though as they only set it to 1 of 3 "flames" when they lit it. There were two sauces, a very salty sesame one and another one I couldn't remember tasting of anything really.
Service was interesting. Our waitress was new and let us know that. Not a problem, she was attentive and tried, but whenever she came by to check on us she would clear something from the table. Not a bad thing, except when she would reach across us while we were eating to pick up a straw wrapper or empty dish. A bit intrusive but better attentive than dismissive, I guess.
A decent experience overall. I'm excited to try Choga to...
Read moreI’m the usual hot soup to-goer when I’m gonna eating by myself. They usually pack the soup very well and pack side dishes for you, so it’s also another option if you would to avoid the smoke from BBQ and just want to relax at home and have some Korean food at home.
Last Thursday was my first time dine there after they got remodeled-definitely like the new refresh and modern look more. The service was friendly and quick. I was there with a fiend on a Thursday night at 5:30 pm so the place was not too crazy and smoky which was nice. Would highly suggest to get there early to get nice seating and faster service with not too smoky environment. We had some problem with one of the side dishes and the waiter was very helpful to helped us resolved the issue quickly. We ordered some soup dishes. I got Yukaejang soup (spicy beef soup) and my friend got TTeok Mandi Guk (beef dumplings soup with rice cake). we also got the steamed egg, but it turned out pretty disappointing. I was hoping they might make it right this time (had order that couple times) but unfortunately not. Too much sesame oil flavor that so overpowering the steamed egg instead of delicate and flavorful broth based taste for the Korean steam egg. However, they usually have nice hot soup options, other than the BBQ. The flavors are pretty consistent based on my experiences. Sometimes Kalbi Tong (beef short ribs soup) may be more toward salty side but flavor overall is good. It’s sad that not many Korean restaurants serves other dishes options besides BBQ in town, but if you are craving for some Korean hot soup this will be a nice place to check it out. I tried their Korean hot pots some time ago and they were good. The portion was large enough for a few people to enjoy. Happy dining! Hope these...
