I'm updating my review. I will never come back to this restaurant ever again. My last couple visits here have been quite unpleasant. Earlier this year, I took my mother, sister, and daughter here to get takeout and the restaurant wasn't crowded. It took nearly 40 minutes to get our orders completed. There were a few others who received their food before us and perhaps they called their orders in ahead of time. When we finally got our food to go, there was no apology whatsoever. My mother looked at me and said, "You recommended this place?" I don't know if they were short on help but we never got an acknowledgement nor an apology. So yesterday evening, at about 3:45, I decided to drop in for dinner take out. I thought I would give them another chance, thinking that the last visit was just a bad day for that restaurant. The gentleman's demeanor was not good and he never smiled. When he handed me my change, he placed the money on the counter when I clearly had my hand out. I'm wondering if I had typhoid fever or some other life threatening disease. This is my last visit here. The food was okay but the quality was little less than desirable for future visits. The only reason why I made a stop here is because it's less than five minutes from my job off 137th street. Next time, I will drive the distance and stay on the Missouri side and go to Steam Bowl off Independence Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. I will drive the distance because I live in southern Jackson County just 2 blocks from Cass county. Stay away from fortune Walk. See my prior review below. I'm high disappointed. I'm also wondering if they have a problem with people of color, especially since I'm black. That is the impression that I got but I could be wrong. All I can say is I will never step foot in this place again. It's really shameful because this place is beautiful on the inside and would be great for dinners on the weekend. Be warned if you are a different ethnic group.
This was my review from a few years ago.
I'm very picky when it comes to food. This is the best Chinese restaurant on both sides of the state line in the Kansas City area. Trust me. Kind of pricey but they give you a...
Read moreI have been going to this restaurant for almost 15 years, and have been, still am, a fan of this restaurant and this location.
There are changes I'm disappointed about- there is no longer "Shrimp w. Lobster Sauce" offered as a dish, as it used to be on the dinner menu, but not the lunch- today, it has been completely removed from the menu at both locations.
There are changes that are more than disappointing- I have recently been dining carry-out during their lunch hours, and the quality of the food is closer to leftovers, making me suspicious it might be just that. The difference in quality is not subtle between what they serve at carry-out lunch today to their fresh and made to order dine-in lunch and dinner.
During my last dine-in experience I have enjoyed everything- the Firecracker Chicken is a staple of this restaurant and is a must try. Their Crab Rangoon is unparalleled when made to order and fresh. I can't recommend their egg drop soup enough, if you find yourself here, order it- they use real chicken, and the umami flavor is sensational.
There is something for everyone- my husband doesn't like Chinese food, usually, but he loves their chicken fried rice. Their regular fried rice is made with the same quality as their chicken fried rice, it just doesn't include chicken.
I won't give up on them, and will try to come in for dine-in, but because it is less convenient, I won't be able to give them my business...
Read moreOur go to Chinese place in the JOCO metro area. We moved from Hawaii which had an abundance of every kind of Asian food you could want, so we really needed our fix and we're lucky we found Fortune Wok.
We've been here probably a half dozen times in the last 18 months and it's always very tasty and good and this last visit was no different. In fact this last visit seemed even better/more delicious than all the other visits.
The main reason we found this place is that our daughter is gluten free. Not the trendy as of late "Oh, I'm gluten sensitive" stuff, but no carp, damage to her digestive tract celiac disease. This place has a huge dedicated gluten free menu section which even includes many breaded items that you normally don't find or are not very well done. This stuff is amazing. As a matter of fact, as a family, we all just order everything from the gluten free menu as it is very large/varied and we have tons of favorite dishes on there.
We did try the other location "Fortune Wok and Sushi" or whatever it is called one time, but this has always been much better, so I can't speak for the other location as much. I don't know what the ownership/management relationship is between the two locations is, but stick...
