Mikato Steak and Sushi — Restaurant in Owensboro

Very disappointed. We were staying in Cannelton for my birthday. I wanted hibachi scallops. After finally settling for this place bc of the higher rating and not being able to get REAL hibachi we went in. The place was very dark. We were literally the only people in there! We hear a voice upon entering say hello sit anywhere. We look around any eventually see the voice is coming from behind the sushi bar. We seat ourselves at a table. A women comes out of a unlit room. After using the restroom I pass by the room and not sure what it is. Looked like a combination of a flea market and storage room that had exploded inside a room. My husband explains it is my birthday. She replies “Mmhmm, ok, what you want”!? We order hibachi which unlike in Indiana it is prepared in the kitchen I guess. The soup was cold, I ordered scallops, him steak. The sea scallops, tiny! The rest of the plate I didn’t touch. Very very disappointed!!! Most of the lights and the one lit screen/tv were also off. I guess to save on electricity. The bathroom was in need of repair and not exactly clean. The table, some type of pressed wood with thick lacquer to appear shiny was actually broken and splintered where the plates would sit. I just expected so much more! Very unprofessional, unclean, questionable and over priced for such an environment. The prices also were different in the menu vs. our check. For instance my wine was listed at $4.95, check said $5.95. It seems some updates to the menu are needed. May want to clarify actual prices if you have a budget for the night. This place is amazing, I absolutely recommend, if not for the food then for the service. The place is tidy, low light, and calming. You just walk in and pick a seat. The server we had (I’m unsure of her name) was the best server I’ve ever met. She was incredibly friendly, engaged with the table, and was patient with the whole group as we decided to what to order. I got the jalapeño appetizer and Hawaiian roll. When I ate the appetizer, I only ate the filling at first, and the server playfully made fun of me for not eating them right 😭🫶 she did a great job making us feel at home. She constantly made sure our drinks were topped up and that we had everything we needed.

At the end, I went to take my sushi to go, and she asked me how long it would be before I’d be able to put the sushi away and offered me ice to keep it cold. When she found out I’d still be out for another few hours, she told me not to take the tuna on top to go and to eat it at the restaurant because she wasn’t confident it would hold up. I’ve never had a server care so much about my health, it was incredibly touching. Eat here!! This restaurant loves...

OMG this restaurant is absolutely fabulous, I've worked for many of the Japanese restaurants here in Owensboro and I have no bad blood with any of them, I love them all, but none of them have what this restaurant has, the staff is absolutely amazing, the owners are incredibly kind, but let's get back to the food! The SUSHI OMG if you love sushi get your butt down to mikato and give it a try, the prices are little higher than some around but you are definitely getting the quality, I've lived all over the USA and this sushi is definitely top 3! There Korean dishes are to die for too! Best bulgolgi I've ever had, they even have the Korean BBQ grills set up, which is so awesome! You litterly get to enjoy the authentic way the Koreans like to eat there BBQ, please please please go to mikato, I know for a fact your mind is going to be blown!!! There's no Japanese restaurant in Owensboro like this one, it's great for the whole family. Don't wait!!!...
