Windy Hollow Biscuit House is a true local gem of a restaurant. I started coming here for the food. But keep coming back for the atmosphere and people. The breakfast buffet is wonderful with light, fluffy scrambled eggs, homemade donuts, the best crispy bacon I’ve ever had, perfectly made biscuits that are crunchy on the outside and so fluffy on the inside, gravy, sausage, fried apples, chicken tenders, (I’m getting hungry just writing this review) and more things are added as it gets toward lunch time. The buffet turns into brunch. There is definitely something for everyone. But the thing about this restaurant that sets it apart from any other restaurant is the people that run it and work here. It is truly a welcoming, fun, family friendly atmosphere. When you walk in, the history on the walls takes you back through the years of Hollywood and Owensboro, KY. Something interesting to see everywhere you look. They even have an extensive gift shop that caters to all things wholesome, old fashion, and especially all things “Kentucky.” The amazing food and really cool ambience of the restaurant are wonderful. I could stop there. But then, you wouldn’t know about the heart and soul of this unique and special place. Rooster, the lady who runs it, has a true “service to the community” spirit. Every Thanksgiving they do family style dinners for something like $1.50 per person (because that’s how much it cost for a dinner back when the Windy Hollow restaurant first opened) and there is a line of people out the door so long that it could wrap around the building. It’s worth the wait. Because when you get inside, the friendliness, joy, and excitement of everyone there is infectious. Rooster often states that she is following in her father’s footsteps and I have no doubt that she is making all her ancestors so proud. She is the type of earth Angel that opens the restaurant on a cold and bitter snow day, tells all the staff to stay safe at home so they don’t have to risk a hazardous drive, and then she personally waits on the few crazy customers (I was one) who made their way through the snow and ice just to come to this awesome restaurant. (Yes, the food is THAT good.) Rooster could have said, “We’re closed.” She was trying to close… but for me and my husband, and for another family who came in a little later, she served us. She had food made fresh for us and served us family style. She has the heart of service and it is her love to nourish people. I can not say enough about how amazing this restaurant is. And it’s all about the people who created it, run it, work there, and eat there. Once you experience it for yourself, you’ll keep coming back… first, for the awesome food. And then, because it feels...
Read moreThis restraunt could benefit from curtains and more competent staff. We first arrived and they sat us next to the window with direct sunlight. And they did this because there were so many tables that hadn't been cleaned that it was a last option. We asked if they could clean a table and I have never seen a busser take so long to clean a table. We waited 20 minutes to get our drink order taken. Brought drinks but no straws. But I couldn't ask anyone for them because anytime I waved at anyone working, they smiled and walked away. 35 more minutes go by and we finally had our order taken. When we got our food it was missing parts of the order specified on the menu that it would have (chocolate gravy, bacon, etc.) We were told the kitchen didn't include it to avoid getting the other food soggy. So we had to ask for the food it was supposed to have anyway. Why would it get soggy? How long does it sit in the window?
The staff needs to be cross trained or offer help to the waitresses when others call out. I saw like 6 runners but only 2 waitresses. And noticed an older lady with shorter gray hair yelling at the waitresses by the kitchen door. All the older ladies at the entrance were concerned about were sitting people down and put extra stress on the waitresses trying to keep up. I felt bad for our waitress. Lovely younger blonde lady. You could visibly see how stressed she was trying to keep up with everyone else standing around and just putting people in seats. Food is decent but if you have somewhere to be, you'll be stuck there for almost 2 hours. We won't be back until the staff is better equipped to handle more...
Read moreDeconstructed biscuit and gravy plate, coffee, water. And cinnamon roll bread pudding to go (took to go). $16.96 then added a tip. Good service. Friendly staff.
Coffee is straight up American brew , no cream needed, was not bitter.
The food took me back home to the farm. I'm just waiting for a rooster to crow and smell the smoke house. Peppery sausage gravy. Biscuits fluffy on the outside and crisp and flakey on the outside. Sausage, eggs and bacon tasted old school farm fresh. Sausage is bold sagey and a dash of heat. Bacon crisp and old school smokey flavor. Eggs were fluffy and creamy. The tomato slices were tasty, it was an add on (I wanted fresh to go with the savory). I tasted the bread pudding, Oh My Yum! Gooey, cinnamon, sweet, crisp sugar and flakey cinnamon roll!!
The server was friendly and attentive. The hostess was cheerful and walked at a good pace for me to keep in step. The cleaning crew were friendly, swift and pleasant. If I made eye contact, staff spoke.
I had a very tasty and pleasant experience. Y'all come on in...
