La Vero's Mexican Food & Beer — Restaurant in Oxnard

Came here last Thurs evening as per the many raving recommendations. I arrived about 45 min before closing. It was busy & lively, & most tables were taken by groups of people enjoying friends, family, & the futbol game on tv. Just the perfect environment for me to decompress & catch a good meal after spending an exhausting day with my elderly & very ill parents. My mother especially was on my mind.

I was greeted by a waitress & settled at a table in front of the door. I enjoyed perusing the very extensive & mouth-watering menu! When my waitress returned to take my order (Machaca Plate plus Chicken Tacos Plate To Go), I asked if I could move over one table (next to the wall) as it was beginning to be chilly on my back. It had just opened up, so she said that she would be back to clean it up for me.

I’m not a high-maintenance person & I could see that the place was hopping, so I carried my water & chips/salsa over with me as I waited for her to return. After awhile, during which I checked my emails & browsed the internet (by now wondering if I'd been forgotten), a different waitress arrived with my meal & placed it onto the dirty table. I thanked her, but also asked her if she would please wipe off the table. I was shocked when she came back with a big & dirty floppy dish towel, shoved my plate aside & carelessly mopped the area directly in front of me. If I was any shorter, she would have splashed it across my face! As it were, I reached out just in time to pick up my plate before she swung the dirty towel into my food! She did not clean the whole table.

This was disturbing, but I was very tired, & by nature try to give people a lot of leeway before getting offended. (Better for my blood pressure & just makes the world a better place!). And after all, I just needed to eat & be on my way.

The carnitas were dried out, though tasty. The beans were lukewarm with a chunk of (unmelted) cheese stuck on top of them. Somebody obviously neglected to stick my plate in the warmer to let the cheese melt! The rice was equally tepid & both the rice/beans were bland. I only ate 1-2 bites of each. I did eat the carnitas & accompanying green salad, which satisfied my hunger. The Tacos Plate To Go still sits unopened in my fridge. I’ll probably toss it. Neither waitress came to check on me, refill my water, etc. - except to bring my bill & the To Go order & then to collect payment.

I tipped 20% as I usually do, but in writing this review, I’m kicking myself for not realizing at the time that the staff was thoroughly conducting themselves very, very poorly. Was it because I asked to change tables - or to have my dirty table cleaned? Was that "attitude" that I caught out of the corner of my eye each time? Needless to say, I'm very disappointed in the service, very disappointed in the food & I will not be back. But I do wonder what the heck is up with this place. Do they have unwritten policies like "No Changing Tables" or "No Asking For a Clean Table" or is it “Regulars Only/No Strangers”? La Vero's has a loyal following so they probably won't care about this review. But let the...

To start off, menus were dirty, sticky and peeling. Salsa bottles pretty much the same. Table was also sticky. They told us to sit where ever we wanted. Cool. Took them 10mins to bring us chips and salsas. Fine. Conversation was good so we didn’t mind. We ordered when they brought the salsa (she didn’t bring it with the chips. She was too busy catering to the drunk table next to us) and 40mins later our food still hadn’t arrived. Nothing crazy, literally two plates of chilaquiles with eggs and beef steak. One star ‘cause they didn’t charge us for the 2 waters that they brought us but the people that had arrived 15mins AFTER us were already half way through their plates. Don’t know if we’ll give them another chance but this was definitely disappointing. Can’t even post pictures of the food ‘cause it never arrived.
