We arrived about an hour after it opened on a Monday, noon. We were waiting to be seated because there was a "Please wait to be seated" sign at the door. After a few minutes, a waiter came in from helping patrons outside and told us we could sit anywhere. After a few more minutes it became clear that he was the only waiter working. We also noticed that there was only one cook in the kitchen working. There were a few people eating when we arrived but not many. This is September, so there are a lot of tourists in the area. It felt like this establishment was not prepared for serving customers.

The atmosphere is nice outside. There's a patch of grass behind the building overlooking a beautiful view. Inside its very plain. The Hawaiian/Asian theme of the food served is nearly the only influence in the location. There are 5 pictures that are island themed, some tiki carvings on the walls by the bathrooms, and some flowers and paddles above the fireplace inside. Otherwise it looks like an American restaurant that serves Hawaiian/Asian inspired food.

The food was ok. Not the best I've had but not awful. I wouldn't have the desire to come here again, especially with the very slow service. Some would say "in northern Arizona, what do you expect?" The answer is I expect a restaurant that advertises they serve this style of food to put there heart and soul into it and not just sit on the fact that they are one of the only places in the area that serves this type of food. It's possible that they didn't have more waiters and cooks because they are struggling to make ends meet. Which isn't a surprise given the service, food, and lack of related atmosphere inside. I wish them the best but they need to improve service, food and the interior theme. Also, the food is too expensive for the quality. You aren't paying for atmosphere either. This is a tourist...

After a long day on the road, hiking and exploring the local national parks, we went to Sunset 89 seeking a good meal. At 7:30pm on a Sunday, we waited 20 minutes to be seated (Even though there were clearly tables available). Once seated we waited another 20 minutes before a server approached us to take our order. After a total of 40 minutes of waiting (without even being asked if we wanted some drinks) we asked how long the wait for food would be. The server told us the kitchen was taking a long time and it would be at least 30 mins to a hour. We decided to leave.

The staff were polite and did apologies for the wait, but it would seem there is no one in charge who knows how to run a restaurant. The first red flag was the fact we were left queuing at the door, when there were plenty of tables we could have been seated at. Then, whilst sat at the table waiting, We saw 2 servers walking round aimlessly as if they didn’t know what to do. One server went out the back behind the kitchen for what looked like a break. Another walked around the bar like they were caught in 2 minds about what to do. It wasn’t as if the place was busy. Half the tables inside were empty, there were plenty of staff around, there was just no one coordinating.

I don’t often write reviews, but I felt I had to, in the hope that this criticism can be used to help Sunset 89 improve. The restaurant itself has the potential to be a great spot. It is well located, looked clean and is nicely decorated. Obviously we didn’t get to try the food, so no comment there. It was just super frustrating to see how it was being run, with a clear lack of attentiveness to their guests and no reassurance or efforts made to improve...

So walking in, we were seated and the service seemed like we were in the right place. Things went great until the food arrived. The prices were rather high, but it's a tourist spot. Would have been easier to swallow if the food was decent. Ordered two bowls, a side Cesar salad, and a soda, and they automatically added 18% gratuity, which brought our meal to $108. Again, a tourist spot. The salad did not come out before the entree, so now my food gets cold while I eat the salad. So my Cesar salad did not have romaine, it's mixed greens. I would not have ordered if I had known. I ask the server: why mixed greens? He says: romaine is too expensive. But a bowl of noodles is $36? Crazy. I ordered the teriyaki chicken bowl with noodles, my wife ordered the Korean rib bowl with rice. The chicken was not ok, the flavor and texture were off, noodles were underdressed and lacked flavor. The ribs were the star of the show, it was a shame the rice was dry. Neither dish was presented well, and were assembled without care or presentation foresight. The people were nice but our water and soda were never refilled, and napkins were not on the table; not sure that warrants an auto 18%. I struggled with a 1 or 2-star review, but the experience was just not good. Wish the experience matched the views.

What a shame, seems like this place has the bones of a quality meal, too bad. I would not return, maybe you have a...

🌟 An Unforgettable Culinary Experience at Sunset 89! 🌟 Chef Dino has truly mastered the art of bringing flavors to life. With his Polynesian heritage and world-class training from culinary school in New York (where he graduated at the top of his class!), his dishes are nothing short of spectacular. Every bite reflects his global travels, blending authenticity with creativity in ways I’ve never experienced before. As someone with Celiac disease, dining out is often a stressful experience due to cross-contamination. But at Sunset 89, I felt completely safe. The care and attention to detail in accommodating dietary needs are unmatched—no discomfort, just pure enjoyment and even an unexpected boost of energy after the meal! The staff here deserve just as much praise. They are quick, attentive, and so friendly that they make you feel like family. And the views? Absolutely breathtaking. Sunset 89 is perfectly named, as the sunsets here are incredible—an Instagram dream for foodies and travelers alike. This restaurant is truly a gem. Whether you’re local or visiting, you have to experience Chef Dino’s magic for yourself. It’s a place where amazing food, fantastic service, and stunning views come together for a perfect dining experience. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
