A quintessential diner in small town Palmyra on Main Street. My Mom and I take day trips from West Allis to smaller towns in southeastern Wisconsin searching for a good lunch and conversation. This restaurant is one of my Mom's favorites and she gives 5 stars for the food, atmosphere and conversation. She was greeted nicely and she was offered to sit anywhere in the restaurant. There were two dining rooms, front and back. Mom choose the front dining room in a booth closest to the kitchen and serving staff. The restaurant was spotless. Mom notices everything. There was an extensive menu and Mom choose a grilled cheese sandwich and a piece of banana cream pie for dessert. Today is a Lenten Friday and Mom is fished out eating a lot fish during the past several weeks. I gave Mom 1/2 of my French fries from my fish sandwich (which was amazingly great, the bun was toasted perfectly and the 3 thick crinkle slices of dill pickles were excellent fish toppers. Of course I slathered tartar sauce holding the pickles onto the fish. Winner, Winner fish sandwich). The server and (probably) the owner approached our table multiple times making sure that we were happy with our food and that we were having a comfortable dining experience. We both felt that Main Street Family Restaurant wants to make sure that you are happy. All in all this was a good day trip for Mom and Mom gave Main Street Family Restaurant in Palmyra, WI 5 stars. I hoped for a little more conversation given that we are not locals. But, I learned today that when you turn a coffee cup over from bottom to top that is sitting on a paper place mat in front of you means you want coffee. Rut Row. I should have known that one. I just wanted to move the cup out of the way. I would have given 4.75 stars (more for general...

The server - friendly, attentive, professional - brought us water and took our drink order.
For starters of either salad or soup, I chose New England Clam Chowder. It was thick and filled with clams and potatoes. The other choice was chicken soup (dumpling?).
We all ordered 5 piece cod dinners. Potato choices included fries, baked, and potato pancakes and maybe a couple more. The beer battered cod was meaty, very hot, with a light, crispy coating. The potato pancakes served with applesauce were perfect - crispy on the outside with just a hint of onion. As I only finished 2 pieces, I topped off the dinner with a slice of lemon meringue pie - one of many pies or cakes to choose from. The frothy meringue was sweet, as was the crust, and the lemon filling was creamy and perfectly tart in contrast.
A return visit is warranted!!
Reasonably priced....
Read moreConsistent and good quality food with really friendly owners and staff. We’ve been coming here for years. I’d moved away and combined with COVID restrictions I hadn’t been here since the Fall of 2019.
I was just in town and hiking in the area. We stopped for the take out Fish Fry. The same friendly and efficient staff greeted us. Theresa is always a pleasant professional. She took our order and had it ready earlier than planned.
The food quality was just as perfect as two years ago and as consistent as the years we’ve been frequenting Main Street. The baked cod filets are fresh, ample, well seasoned and cooked. The potato pancakes are well made and made in house. Salads and sandwiches are a good size with delicious sides. Don’t forget the wide array of pies for dessert.
Keep up the great work and great food Main Street. It’s always our stop...
