Loved it! Two adults and one 10-year-old walk in the door and a woman standing at the waitress station at the bar greets us with "Chicken? Fish? Shrimp? Or walleye?" We were a little stunned because we expected the whole sit at a table and order with menus thing. We first asked if there was sit down dining due to the whole Covid thing and were assured there was but it worked with us answering her question before waiting at the bar for our food and table to be ready. Different, but we rolled with it because that's what everyone else seemed to be happily doing. The bartender was pleasant and attentive. I don't know how long we waited because I was just relaxed and taking the unique atmosphere in. Turns out there is a menu that the bartender pointed out wasn't all that accurate due to changing open dates but whatever, we were there for the fish fry I've been hearing about for decades. It wasn't fast, but not too long after they called our name and we were seated in the next room with our amazing food fresh and hot waiting for us. I had the walleye that was not all you can eat but that did not matter because there were two giant crispy filets of it. My wife got the cod which was all you can eat and our child got the chicken. All excellent. Our waitress was personable like you were a guest in her home. I overheard other tables talking that they drive over an hour to come for this experience. My only regret is that I didn't come sooner to see the recently passed German owner run it while playing the piano that was sadly seen covered with a sheet at the head of the bar. Some may read this review and be not as happy with what I described but sometimes you just gotta roll with it...
Read moreGood food and friendly staff. This review is regarding one particular gripe I have with their Friday night fish fry. I have to agree with most of the other reviewers, the fish is very good as are the potato pancakes. You can tell they're home made and not frozen. If you're like most people and satisfied with a standard 3-piece dinner and might ocassionally re-order one more piece you'll be happy. I'm a bigger guy and, while NOT a competitive power-eater who has 40 pieces of fish, when I go to all-you-can-eat fish fries I'm used to having a couple more helpings and most places will bring you 2 pieces each re-order, even 3 if you ask. Not here. When I ask for a re-order my waitress would only bring me one piece at a time and by the time you get the opportunity to ask your waitress for more and finally get it, it’s at least 15 minutes between re-orders. This was my experience on a couple of visits so I get the impression that, despite offerng an A-U-C-E fish fry, they deliberately discourage people from indulging by making it very inconvenient for anyone with a big appetite to have more than one or two extra pieces. I even asked for a couple pieces the second time and she told me "we only give one each time" and believe me, there's a looooong wait between pieces. I gave 4 stars because both Fridays I went the food was fine and the staff is friendly. But if you're a big eater and usually have 6 or 7 pieces of cod when you go for a fish fry, be prepared to stay late. 1 piece per re-order and about 15 - 20 minutes between pieces. That's the only reason we stopped going. There are other places in the area serving good all-you-can-eat fish fries that don’t play...
Read moreI am Wisconsin born and raised, so I have had a few fish frys. My grandpa took me to this fish fry and my dad takes me to this fish fry and I take anyone willing to make the trip to this fish fry. Today there was a party of 14 waiting for a table. I cant think of a better place I'd rather spend time with my family having a meal. Come early because this place is the real deal. I'm talking like 3:30. Then you wait at the bar or outside if there's no room, which is likely. Then you get the fish and the potato pancakes. The fries are just regular crinkle cut, and the chicken is good, but their cod is wonderful and the potato pancakes will floor you. All of this is unlimited, and that's in addition to rye and butter, applesauce, and coleslaw. This is the epitome of a traditional Wisconsin German fish fry. Worth the trip from at least an hour away. I would come here every week if I could make it...
