I have gone her probably 20 times and never had a problem until today. I have celiac disease and need to eat gluten free. This place has a gluten free menu with a good selection. I've ordered many times with specific instructions that my food needs to be prepared with a change of gloves and clean knives /cutting board. My husband does not need to eat gluten free and orders off the regular menu. As stated above, we have never had a problem before and have even ordered take out. Tonight my husband went there to pick up takeout and he placed the order with the server to go. All was well until the entire order came in one box. He had explained the requirements of the food preparation in detail. He explained that his roll was fine, but that my order would need to be remade. The owner who was preparing the sushi threw a fit and stated he had gotten fresh rice, no gluten.... Rice doesn't contain gluten. The soy sauce and tempura my husbands roll contained did. The owner then tried to just switch my food to a new box. My husband explained that that does not work for someone with a food allergy. The owner threw his hands up and yelled at my husband. My husband stated that either the food needed to be remade or he needed his money back. He left with no food as the owner refused to remake the food. I feel like this restaurant should not have a gluten free menu if the owner doesn't even know what gluten is! This was once one of our favorite places, but we will...
Read moreI've been meaning to try this sushi place for a while now. Finally made it happen. I ordered Miso soup, Gyoza, Side Salad and a mix of Makimono and Nigiri. Everything was good. Something is missing from the sushi rice though. Maybe not enough rice vinegar? It didn't have much flavor. Also the Maguro didn't taste very fresh. The scallop nigiri was excellent - maybe the best I've had in a while. I had the tempura shrimp maki. Again, maybe the way they make their rice, something was missing. It was okay, not great. As with all first visits to a sushi joint, and like my other food hangups, I have a gold standard. For sushi restaurants, it's whether they have Natto or not. I learned to love sushi by marrying into a Japanese household. My children's mama is half Japanese. So I got exposed to sushi and Japanese cuisine from that angle. And I learned to love Natto - a fermented soy bean paste which is repellant to most non-Japanese folks. But I love it. In makimono, on top of rice, by itself....milkshakes....I just love it. If a joint has Natto it gets my gold star. Well Sakae Sushi doesn't have Natto. Neither does any other sushi joint I've found in KC. If anybody knows of one, please let me know. No gold star here. But a joint...
Read moreI recently moved to the area and was looking for a good noodle spot to eat. I really want to like this place, because it is so close to my home, but each time I order take-out I'm dissatisfied with the experience. Now, I understand why. I was able to answer my own question about my experience by reading the reviews. I usually order the Yaki Soba combination with Shrimp, Chicken and Beef. Each time the meat is overcooked, and they don't offer Yum Yum sauce, which would help with the dryness of the meal. When I first asked for Yum Yum sauce they seemed like they had no idea what I was talking about, which should have been a clear indication to me that I might have an issue with their version of the dish. It is almost as if the people who offer this dish don't know a whole lot about it or don't personally eat it themselves, so they're not aware of the experiences other might have when eating it (dry); and then it dawned on me why; I'm visiting a place that specializes in sushi. This helps explain why what seems like a standard Japanese dish is so sub par at this restaurant. I keep Yum Yum sauce and Hoisin sauce at home, so I add them to the dish if I order...
