We tried visiting on the Thursday prior but there was a note on the door that stated they were closed because of the fair, so we returned the next day full of anticipation because of all the raving reviews. The exterior of the restaurant has bar-style seating facing the road. Inside has a few high-top tables/chairs and two short 6-seater tables/chairs. To the right of the cashier it looked like it also had bar-style seating. Overall, seating seemed limited as there was a lot of empty floor space; perhaps they plan to add more since the business is only ~4 months old. As you walk in, the cashier and ordering counter is straight ahead, you can't miss it (this may create some safety issues at the entrance/exit if too many people are in line waiting to order). To the right on the wall is the menu but you can check it out online before getting to the restaurant to save some time. You order and pay at the cashier, select a seat if dining in, then your food is brought to your table by the order number on your ticket. I was undecided so I ordered the dark meat combo (chicken): 2 legs, 1 thigh, 1 combo side (red beans & rice), and cornbread - $18.99; I also got a bag of cajun whole crawfish (1lb) - $19.99; and a side of fried okra - $6.99. We dined in. The food came out on a plastic tray. The crawfish was in a clear plastic bag inside a brown take out cardboard container. It had wedges of lemon inside and gloves to keep your hands semi-clean. The crawfish smelled good and looked well-seasoned but it tasted more buttery than cajun to me. Overall it was just okay.
The dark meat combo (chicken) came out on the same tray except it was in a styrofoam to-go box. The chicken was fried golden brown with a crispy exterior and juicy interior. It was well-seasoned and did not need any additional condiments, except pepper sauce if you like it spicy. Be mindful, chicken is made to order so it could be up to a 20 minutes wait. There is a handwritten note to inform customers of this near the menu. The red beans and rice were good but the cornbread seemed a bit bland.
My fried okra came out in a small yellow paper bag. That was the best part of my meal. They were fried fresh so they were steamy hot. They had a nice crispy exterior, moist inside, and perfectly seasoned. Yummy!
For drinks - there is no alcohol. Fountain drinks are available for $3.50 and include free refills. Koolaid is also available for $2.99 but no refills. And there are a variety of bottled drinks.
The portions are good and overall the food was good. I was definitely stuffed and satisfied leaving there.
The soul food option is definitely a welcome alternative to the "generally American" and Mexican cuisines in the...
Read moreIf you’re in Paso Robles… you seriously need to stop by and try here. I get it, you’re here looking for just wine and food pairing. But! If you need other than just wine and cheese, get some real good soul food here.
Food: What we tried: Fried Catfish, Fried Okra, Fried Chicken, and Mac n Cheese. We never tried Fried Catfish before and boy was this super good. The seasoning was perfect that you don’t really need any sauce for it. Not too salty. Just great. Fried Okra the same. Fried Chicken for me personally was a little salty (I eat a little bland more), but it was perfect for my husband and I know most people would love the seasoning as well. We wish we stayed in Paso longer to be able to try all the other food! We will be back!
Service: Friendly staff and they were super nice to check up on people. The food might take long to come out, but give them that time so that they can perfectly fry the food! It’s worth the wait. The waiting period makes sense on the type of food you order. If it’s fried, you want them to make sure to fry it well and not over fry it as well.
Atmosphere: It’s a chill spot. If it looks empty when you first walk in, it’s because a lot of people were ordering take outs. Perhaps to pair the food with wine at home? Why not? Although pairing it with beer would be better. There’s plenty of space for people to sit inside. Nothing too crazy and it’s a simple place for people to focus on the great food that they’re eating. We enjoyed our stay to eat. There’s a small outdoor sitting area if you want to bring your dogs too. There’s parking in front of the place as well.
Thank you for the...
Read moreWe were in town to get an overpriced pork chop at a local favorite, then I saw Dubs… best fried chicken? Pork chop and fried catfish??? Wait a minute , need to go in and see what it’s all about. They’re kinda new about a year or more. We love Cajun Creole foods. We lived down in San Bernardino, we used to visit a restaurant in Rialto, Darn good lip smack in food. We decided to give them a try , did not disappoint, great fried chicken piping hot and crispy, catfish was delish, Mac n cheese soo goood. Unfortunately they serve the pork chops only on Sunday and collard greens were still not ready at least for an hour. All in all we really enjoyed our meal. Could use A little more herbs or Cajun spices to really bring out that Cajun flavor, other than that it was worth it. And I didn’t miss not having my pork chop at the other spot. They are about 2 blocks north of the park. Great music playing too, a few TVs oh next time I’ll try their banana pudding and strawberry pudding. They have plenty of hot sauces, or bring your own favorite to add to the...
