Life time in Utah, first time at Maddox. After going I feel like I've missed out on one of the best Utah eateries in existence up till now. 3 friends and I ordered 4 different "Meals for 2" and we all tried everything with leftovers enough to feed 3 more friends. Huge portions of high-quality beef. These steaks are amazing, thick cuts of ranged beef tender and aged perfectly. Cooked with i am assuming a dry rub of some kind that left the steaks with a nice bark and very juicy, tender and flavorful mouthful. Perfect texture and amazing aroma. I couldn't believe the quality and expertise that must have went into these. And for the price, absolutely amazing. You'd pay twice as much for half the quality anywhere else.
The "shrimp steaks" a Maddox original, was surprisingly good as well. If you like shrimp, but don't like the tails and shells you really should try it. They must make their own cocktail sauce. Its actually what made the shrimp steak for me. It just had a deep and mild taste with a nice horseradish bite at the end. I didn't see any gratings of Horseradish in it so I'm not sure how they do it but it tastes like there is fresh grated horseradish in there. Superb.
The "Chicken fried steak" also a signature dish was above average. Not my personal favorite dish, but certainly palatable. Reminded me of the way my grandma made it. Had a nice hearty breading and wasn't too dry. The mashed potatoes and gravey compliment it well and are the sides i would recommend to go with it.
Finally, the skinless fried chicken was something a friend insisted on. I was frankly hesitant to try it. Most of my moms family is south of Mason-dixon, I grew up eating homemade fried chicken and the skin was my favorite part. To my surprise, I was actually really impressed with the Maddox offering. Yeah. No skin. But excellent breading with a nice seasoning that left it with a very enticing flaky crispy exterior and excellent presentation. The meat wasn't overly dry, as is the case i find often when attempts are made at skinless fried chicken. It wasn't soggy either. The flesh had a nice mouth feel and the taste was typical southern style, Surprisingly good. Even though it was skinless, i found myself going back for another piece, despite going into it intending to just have one so i could say i tried it, and yeah, it sucked. But NO !!!, it was actually very good. Probably the first time I've been able to say that about skinless fried chicken.
So. There you go. I have driven by this place countless times and figured it was just a tourist draw. But no. I couldn't have been more wrong. Its a true Utah gem and I wish I had tried it decades ago. Couldn't have been more impressed. And you have to put thier home made rolls and raspberry butter on your bucket list. You HAVE to try them before you die or you'll never know what a home-style dinner roll has the potential to be, especially when its accompanied by this ingenious butter.
The other sides we got where all great. I am still shocked this level of food was available as take out. I called in the order, and picked it up. The whole process was super easy and they got the order perfect. The staff I encountered were very friendly and helpful. The people in line in front of me I noticed ordered several 2 liter bottles and so i asked the young lady what they sold by the 2 liter bottle. I had noticed they had hand crafted soda on the menu but didn't see the option for 2 liter bottles and ended up adding some rootbeer and sasparilla to the order. They had no problem adding it on and it was soooo good.
All and all. It was a very positive experience. I am trying to think of some constructive feedback that could proffer an opportunity for improvement but honestly can't really think of anything.
I will be back. Sooner rather than later, and next time will make sure I bring my kids so they don't spend a lifetime in Utah not knowing what an amazing...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOne of the best restaurants/drives-ins in the state. Has been around for over 50 years and it's always pretty busy. Prepare for a wait on the weekends if either eating at the dine in cafe or restaurant or if ordering to go from the takeout cabin. If eating at the drive in, there can be a wait as well. You can always call ahead to add yourself to the wait-list (for the restaurant) or order in advance for takeout. Now for the food: Most items are fantastic. The chicken baskets are large, 4 pieces of fried chicken, breast, thigh, leg and wing, with fries or mashed potatoes. Country gravy over mashed and chicken gravy to dip your fries in... basket includes a roll and corn pone and comes with their famous raspberry butter. Their steak hoagies are super tasty. Their turkey steaks are awesome but the versions differ if eating drive in, they're on a bun, or inside, a thicker dinner style version. They have house made root beer and sasparilla. Their pies are heavenly. There are 3 menus depending on where you eat. The restaurant is more upscale and has a dinner menu with steaks from their own farm raised cattle. Tons of other great menu choices as well. All menus can be viewed online. If in the area, you have to check it out or you're...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA drive thru with fantastic service, food that you can't get at most drive thrus and was pretty great tasting too. We had a carload of people, so we ordered everything but the kitchen sink, I felt like. I was impressed how quickly it came out for the amount of food we ordered! The rolls and raspberry butter are the stars of the show. Get a dozen you won't regret it and take home the leftover butter to spread on everything. Yum! We tried their chicken (it comes with a chicken gravy that my kids thought was good, it was ok to me). The chicken had a light but salty batter. The fries and onion rings were solid. We all loved their ranch, it was so thick it was almost like a dip. The creamy vegetable soup was a hit for me and my son. We also tried the buffalo burger, regular cheeseburger, and steak sandwich. They were all just ok. My son really enjoyed the steak one. The chocolate cream pie and creme brulee were tasty. I heard the fruit pies were scrumptious. Kids meals are reasonable. Definitely try their fresh made rootbeer and sarsaparilla (if you like it, they're both good). I liked the rootbeer the best, it has a nice kick. Hopefully next time we go, they won't be out of cream soda so we...
