Whenever I tell my colleagues or friends about what I consider the best doughnuts I ever had, it always comes down to Hoeckele Bakery and Deli (or as I will refer to it through my review and as how my late grandpa always refer to them, Hoeckele's). To me, it is the gold standard for baked goods, including their pastries. For one, Hoeckele's has a very unique take on coffee cakes that has a light and fluffy texture, a rich frosting that can have nuts, or coconut or from what I see even cherries (do the do strawberries in there...or other, fun toppings to go with it?). I even brought a few coffee cakes for my coworkers a few years back to Virginia when I lived there; the coffee cake was all eaten before lunch. Yes, the local grocers like Rozier's carry a few of their products, but like most of their baked goods, might as well come to the source. Now, let's get to one of the big draws for Hoeckele's; the doughnuts. Much like some of the big chains, you will want to come early as they tend to sell their doughnuts FAST. They have one of the widest varieties of doughnuts for a local bakery. Their basic glazed doughnut, especially when fresh is fluffy, not dense and is a pleasure to bite into. The glaze is just right as well; the right amount of sweetness and not too heavily coated. Though one thing that REALLY stands out is the fosting. They do the normal type of frosting other bakeries do, but their claim to fame? Buttercreme. Yes, they have doughnuts that (like their pudding/cherry filled Bismarck-styled doughnuts) that have vanilla or chocolate buttercreme frosting. I've seen other bakeries use buttercreme as a filling (including a JCMO bakery that tried to replicate the Hoeckele's doughnut, but fell flat), but nope; buttercreme belongs on top as the fosting. Did I mention they also have great doughnut holes? The same awesome doughnut batter as their glazed doughnuts all in a portable form. Hoeckele's also has day olds that are as good as their fresh doughnuts, though I don't recall if they still serve day olds or if you can order custom doughnuts. Hoeckele's also does cakes and lunch items as well. While I have not tried their lunch menu, I have had the pleasure of eating some of their cakes and like their doughnuts, the cakes are also very yummy and are great for any occasion; just be sure to order ahead for that wedding, First Communion, or whatever event you want a cake for. It's been a while since they moved from their original location in Perryville's square, but their current location at MO 51 and Edgemont Blvd. has plenty of parking and is very spacious inside so you won't get crowded while deciding how many doughnuts you want or what kind of cake you'd like to order. There is also some indoor dining, but as I've not tried their lunch, I cannot fairly comment on the dining area. If you're going through the Bootheel/SEMO area and it happens to be breakfast or lunch and want something unique, Hoeckele's is a great choice. If you're local and still haven't tried Hoeckele Bakery and Deli, definitely give them a try for their pastries, cakes...
Read moreFor lunch today I ordered a bowl of the chicken and dumplings for my daughter. I’m from Michigan and had never been here before.
It was a very bland bowl of gelatinous mush and my daughter took one bite and knew immediately it wasn’t something she was going to eat. Me and my family member dipped our finger in the bowl to taste and it really was bland and sub par. I took the full bowl to the front counter and asked to swap it for a different flavor. They refused and said I needed to purchase another bowl. I asked if I could have a refund for the first bowl or to at least let my daughter sample the other soup before i purchased it which again they refused. They did offer me a lid for the bowl to take the chicken and dumpling mush home with us. I told them no and it was disgusting and was going in the trash.
A family member who was with us and lives locally went to the front counter and was able to talk them into letting us have a different soup (vegetable) which my daughter did like better.
Moral of the story? Don't get the chicken and dumplings, its gross. If you or your kids don't like something at this restaurant don't bother asking for a replacement or a refund, you wont get it if you don't have a family with you member who knows them. I heard good things about this restaurant prior to going and I was severely...
Read moreI just recently moved to Perryville MO, and at first I was super excited about the bakery, but after coming I realized it’s not very good. First, they never have donut holes and sometimes they don’t even have the types of regular donuts they claim they have. I have probably went through their drive thru about 20 times and each time they have claimed they ran out of donut holes. This disappointed my family many times and caused us to spend our money else where. One time, they didn’t even have regular donuts! On the bright side, the workers are very nice and the place is very clean inside. When they have the food it’s really good too. For how much Hoeckele’s charges for things, I think that they should at least have everything on there menu ready to serve to customers. The other bakery’s in my old town always had everything and was always...
