The Canton — Restaurant in Petaluma

10/27/2023, @ 1:30PM, sister and I visit at Canton, ordered orange chicken and fried rice for my sister and Mongolian beef and fried rice lunch specials which came with wonton soup for myself and it was "EXCELLENT" taste and food quality which we haven't had this good Chinese food in long time. Most of all, we enjoyed today's lunch so much and everything were above par.

Rate for today's visit; Average Rate 4-Stars Food Quality ----------5 Stars Food Tastes-----------5 Stars (Excellent) Service-------------------5 Stars (waitress) Ambience---------------3 Stars Parking-------------------5 Stars (located in shopping center, plenty of parking plus one disabled parking space front of a restaurant). Restroom---------------1-star (hallway is too dark, couldn't find mens room).

11/28/2023 @ 12:30PM, since last visit we've eaten at Canton every other week but taste have declined. One before last, ordered sweet and sour pork and had no vinegar flavor in sweet and sour pork. ???

Today's order Mongolian beef and tasted way too sweet (tasted like dumped half a cup of sugar while cooking ?) could not believe the taste ??? Even fried rice tasted different from other days. Did they have someone else preparing a cooking instead of owner/chef ??? So for now it's 2-out, so try one more visit and see !!!

12/21/2023 @ 1:00PM, sister and I visited for for lunch hoping owner/chef would be cooking but I can tell just by looking it was prepared by trainee cook. Order Mongolian beef (over cooked in lower temperature) with fried rice (soggy) and wonton soup (soup broth is not hot enough). Especially Mongolian beef should taste spicy not sweet (due to cooking in low temperature). Hope owner/chef would do the cooking and hire a new apprentice cook.

It was okay. The chef definitely has more refined Chinese cooking style than most around town. The menu is rather limited, however and overall the dishes we ordered were good. I googled dim sum and they advertised dimsum, but I didn't see it on the menu. And what is it with Chinese restaurants only giving chopstics on request? 2nd time in as many restaurants out here in Petaluma.

The atmosphere was really generic...and being mostly in a round turret style end unit of a strip mall, we could hear everyone's conversations pretty clearly. The concrete floor and almost undescernable music didn't help to feel a bit cold and impersonal. I don't know how to describe it other than impersonal...or even a temporary situation? Like they got the place and moved some tables and chairs in...idk..just sort of a weird, cold vibe. As I said before, the chef definitely knows what he's doing. I ordered a set dinner that came with wonton soup, and although it looked like wontons in water, it was very flavorful. The sweet and sour pork was nicely done. Small pieces of good pork in delicate batter - not the "meat donuts" of other places in town.

My thought overall is that the set lunch or dinner options are probably the way to go. Mine was huge and included good helpings of each item. We live about 40 minutes away, and probably would not make this a destination restaurant in the future, but a drop in when in the area and have a hankering for Chinese food, absolutely.

Still in search of dimsum without having to go over a bridge, so we'll try a place up...

I feel bad that after all these years of loyal patronage, I haven’t reviewed this place yet! My husband and I have been enjoying this family run restaurant for the last 14 years. This is by far the best Chinese restaurant you will go to in Sonoma County. It is authentic, always consistently delicious, and super clean and fresh. Everything is homemade and you can tell as soon as you put it in your mouth. We normally stick to the same stuff every time, but anytime we do stray, we always fall in love. I believe it’s only family members who work there and they are quiet, sweet, and always remember you.
