I will be in the area on business for a few weeks. Not being from Philly, trying a few of the famous cheesesteak places that I see on TV is a goal of mine. Online you’ll find a million bits of advice on how to get what the locals like. Trust me, I have wasted all sorts of time looking. I think when it comes down to it, you just have to dive in, experiment, try a few places, and learn what you like. Today I tried Dalessandro’s. You’ll find this on most people’s list of top places to go to. It made my list and here I am. I arrived at 10:55 am, 5 minutes before they opened. I was the fifth in line and was happy about that. I ordered a cheesesteak with sharp provolone, grilled onions, salt and pepper. Provolone was one of those tips that I read online from a local giving advice. However, I learned my first lesson on this trip: provolone lacks the creamy gooeyness that I am looking for in a cheesesteak. I believe that Whiz or American would be a better choice for me. American is Dalessandro’s standard and I should have went with it. I was told that it would be about fifteen minutes before my order was ready. As I waited, paying attention to those that were in front of me in the order line, I learned my second lesson: call in your order and wait in your air-conditioned car. You’ll get a text when your name is called to join the pick-up line. I waited about 25 minutes before my name was called. I should have scarfed it right then in the car but I took it to the motel 16 miles away. 16 miles, 40 minutes on crazy Philly roads. Despite the delay, the cheesesteak was awesome! Many reviewers say that Dalessandro’s has gone downhill lately. If this is their downhill cheesesteak then I can only imagine that the uphill version was pure heaven. The steak wasn’t dry; it was plentiful and well seasoned. The grilled onions added some sweetness and crunch. The provolone was perfectly fine and tasted great, but in my opinion, it didn’t melt as well as Whiz or American would have. The bread was still pillowy soft and held up to the time wrapped in foil. It didn’t fall apart or get soggy from the meat and cheese. Dalessandro’s was at the top end of my personal list of places to try and I am glad I made it happen today. It was a satisfying and delicious experience that I would recommend to anyone who loves...
Read moreDuring our weekend in Philadelphia we wanted to check out the best cheese steak in Philly. We googled it and Dellandros was among the top two near us. When arriving there we noticed all the tables outside were full and there was a line of people waiting out front. Wow...this place must be good!! Directly across the street is Chubby's Steaks. Poor Chubby though he had no line outside. Dalessandros must be forcing Chubbys into an early retirement, one steak at a time. We got in the order line window and ordered 2 cheese steaks. We proceeded to say " with everything on it" but they wouldn't do that. You had to pick exactly what you wanted on it. So we just picked lettuce, tomatoes, onions and mayonnaise ( I believe that was all the toppings we added). We really wanted to order fries with our subs but they didnt sell fries. No chips. No onion rings. No pizza. No cereal. No waffles. Well you get the point lol. They say, If you cant be great at everything, be great at something. Total of two subs and two drinks was $40 even. They are CASH ONLY and there is an ATM off to the side in case you didnt bring enough money to get your food. Once you order you then stand in the line of people waiting to be called. When they do call your name....be patient, your not eating yet....hearing your name means you can now enter the pick up line. All together took about 25 minutes from the time we ordered to having the food in hand. Since we really wanted fries we decided to give Chubbys steaks across the street some business and order fries. Well what do you know. Dont judge a book by its cover, they were packed and busy. Chubbys had seats and tables inside and each one was full. Go figure...they didn't sell fries either though. At any rate, the subs were very good. We felt it was definitely worth the drive. the wait and the money. Not sure how business holds up in the rain since your outside the entire time but that sounds like a problem that isn't mine. Giving 4 out of 5 stars since the subs were really good but we would still love to see some french fries or something added...
Read moreD'alessandro's Steaks don't except credit cards or mobile pay in 2024! I rode my Kaabo Wolf Warrior X Plus e-scooter that goes 44mph+ from 8th & Oregon in South Philly only to be denied service because, they only accept CASH! Their ATM only accepts debit or credit cards and not mobile apps. So I rode all way from South Philly to try these great cheesesteaks but I couldn't even get one because all I had was my phone and Google pay! Avoid this place if you're a person that doesn't carry cash and only carries an ATM or all your credit cards are on Google pay or Apple pay. As owners how do you not update your system to accept mobile payments and credit and debit card payments in 2024 do you know how much money you're losing? Unless you like to keep it cash because then you could hide the money! This place is a joke I wasted my time. The best steak shops are in South Philly for a reason. Angelo's Steaks are way better than Dalessandro's. I'm glad I didn't eat here because you never see green peppers on a steak sandwich in South Philadelphia, Center City or anywhere else in the central Philadelphia area. Hot peppers yes, but green or red bell peppers on a cheesesteak in Philadelphia is a sin and I can't believe that I drove all the way to Alessandro's steaks and they actually put green peppers on their steak sandwich. This is not an authentic Philadelphia cheesesteak. I'm a 51-year-old South Philadelphia resident and not one place in South Philadelphia can you get green peppers or bell peppers on a cheesesteak. I should have looked this place up to know that they were a joke before I got there. Bell peppers on a cheesesteak in Philadelphia? I would expect this in Florida or another state but with Manayunk being so close to Philly I can't believe they put green peppers on their...
