In the age of corporate box stores where employees only know the basics about kitchen products, it is a delight to go to a shop where the staff are friendly, helpful, and above all knowledgeable. I've been a customer for about 5 years now and will likely remain a loyal customer for however long I stay in Philly. Note that some of the items here are a bit pricey, but you're paying for quality: something that, if properly cared for, will last years, possibly decades.
I read a negative review here about the purchase of a wooden cutting board that was not properly taken care of. The customer was angered that, though she did not follow given directions on proper care of the item, it got damaged and the store would not let her return it. I ask you to disregard that negative review because some professional cutting board require pre-preparation before use (in this case, oiling the wood). The staff at Fante are very good at telling you everything up front in these cases, and giving you printed instructions when applicable. Search on-line and you'll find a ton of information about oiling and caring for wood cooking items.
All in all, this is a great place to shop if you truly love to cook and want the right tool for the job. An extra bonus is a stellar coffee shop in the store as well! The only change I would make? Later hours! I wish they would stay open until 8 pm or so (mainly due to my weird work schedule, no fault of the store itself), but otherwise I truly love...
Β Β Β Read moreThe staff is friendly, their teas are nice, but I'm disappointed with the quality of their kitchenware. Here is a review of some of the items that failed over the last year or so: 7 inches springform SKU 612903 -- the rivets from the hinge popped off the metal sheet after two uses (we could only bake one cheesecake and one chicken pie in it) Bamboo spoon SKU 5211 -- the bamboo strips frayed after a few months 24oz Turkish coffee pot SKU 5317 -- the plastic handle cracked after a few weeks. Now, the crack spreads almost all the way along the handle Whisk from Cuisinart silicone set SKU 618217 -- one of the wire started popping off after a few uses. Then another... so after a few months, it was unserviceable Corkscrew SKU 613788 -- the pin that secures the screw popped off its securing bores after a few weeks Tong SKU 5209 -- one of the handles cracked a its root after less than a year
I'd really like to support local shops rather than big retailers. Kitchenware should last generations (as are some of the items at my mother's). But about 50 Dollars worth of goods failed within less a year of use. Just...

Took 4 hours to get five knives sharpened and when we opened them up at home, we were extremely disappointed. The clerk thoroughly checked the knives when we dropped them off which seemed like a good start. We were told 45 minutes. Then we were told an extra half hour. Then we were told they were on lunch break so they wouldn't be done for an additional couple of hours. That's a long time to hang out in the Italian Market. No call telling us they were done. And then to find out they did a terrible job. Our smooth blade knives were now slightly serrated. My husband had to reshape/resharpen all of the knives. One of our Japanese knives had a shape to it that was ground away. So disappointing after our previous experience. My recommendation is you ask who will be sharpening your knives and if they have experience doing so ... and ask how many knives are in line before yours so you get a better sense of...
