We visited Rival Bros to meet with a local professional. I hate to be critical, but I was underwhelmed. The employees basically ignored customers, even when we stepped up to the counter, as they were busy having a conversation amongst themselves. My drink was incredibly bitter and I had to add sugar to make it palatable. (I don't tend to order super sweet drinks, and I drink unsweetened coffee all the time. The iced mocha tasted like straight unsweetened cocoa powder, though, which is pretty unpleasant.) The indoor seating was all taken, so we sat outside in Passyunk Square. Clearly, they get a lot of business in their location, and I can see why, based on location.
My husband and I love small, local coffee shops. He worked for a micro roaster when we were newlyweds, and we helped some friends open their coffeehouse many years ago. We enjoy supporting these businesses and watching them succeed. I'm not sure if we just had a one-off experience, but it's not someplace I'd run back to, unfortunately. They have an amazing location and beautiful storefront, but the drinks and service were subpar. I'll probably give them a second chance at some point, though, to see if my experience...
Read moreThe air con makes me wanna eat lead. We are an autistic home and the noise from the Rival Bro AC was driving us mad. We BEGGED them to fix it. Walked down and forced ourselves to make human contact to please ask the massa if they could send a repair guy. We'll since we worked from home and spent weekends in we knew he never came. Our pleas fell on deaf ears. I talked to the owner who only tried doing was figuring out which apartment we were in. So we moved. I'll never drink here because I bought coffee just to be nice so I wasn't taking up a spot in line. So did my partner with autism. And I'm not saying the coffee was bad but having no summers because the AC drowns out life itself is a killer. I ALMOST put some bailer twine in the AC unit to stop the deathly screaming. Which I am not fabricating or embellishing about. It's so bad it triggers my PTSD from the Sand Box and the Stan. I'm being serious. It was horrific and terrifying and it really hurt that the only "help" was to try and see where we lived. Creepy. So me moved far away. I visit South Philly sometimes to see my Gma but I Won't be stopping by here. Maybe the free library...
Read moreOne of the best oat lattes I’ve ever had! The barista was a real comical guy and made a perfect latte for me. I’m here again right now (my third visit) and there are two women working the cafe. I’m sorry to say that her latte just didn’t compare to the guy’s. (Sorry, I am not good on remembering names.) Today’s latte is way too hot which makes it bitter. I don’t like sending anything back unless it was undrinkable. This one isn’t that bad. When I was here the second time, the guy who took my order was kinda rude. I asked for a triple shot as I had gotten on the first visit. He abruptly said they didn’t do triple shots. The sign behind his head clearly states “extra shot $1.50” I didn’t argue I just accepted what he told me. The barista then explained when I asked him about it, and that they pull two shots but can cut it to make it like a triple. 4 shots can be too much for me sometimes. They have a few tables outside and I could see a room in the back which looked like it may have had a lot of space. But I didn’t go back there. Five stars for the comedian barista and his excellent...
