My friend introduced to me to First Cup a few years back and I'm glad he did. As an Ethiopian myself, I'm always wondering how great each restaurant is in the Valley. As far as Ethiopian restaurants go, First Cup definitely ranks as one of the best. Ethiopian food is meant to be shared and ate together. As such, my friends and I ordered a huge plate of food with multiple entrees. From what I recall, we had Kikllile, Quanta firfir, and Dulet, Tibs, and Kitfo. Each had its unique flavor to it that will not disappoint. Being that it's customary to eat with your hands, Ethiopian food might not appeal to some but once you can get accustomed to it, you will open your taste buds to wonderful food. And if you're not a carnivore, they also have delicious vegetarian options that is sure to please. First Cup is an incredible restaurant and easily worth multiple visits either solo or with company.

I’ve been eating at First Cup Ethiopian Restaurant on and off for over five years, and every single time it’s been an incredible experience. The food is always of excellent quality—fresh, flavorful, and consistently prepared with care. That consistency is rare to find, and it’s one of the main reasons I keep coming back. The service is outstanding. The team here greets me warmly every visit, and what touches me the most is the love and compassion they extend—welcoming me barefoot without judgment. That level of respect and kindness goes far beyond food; it’s a reflection of their beautiful spirit. If you’re looking for a restaurant where the food is always top-notch, the service is heartfelt, and the atmosphere feels like home, this is the place. This was our FIRST Ethiopian food experience. It was exciting, vibrant, so tasty and flavorful! We were taught how to use the injera as the utensil (there are no forks or knives) and the service was top notch. We had the lamb that was tender and spicy, the Yetsom Beyaynetu was so colorful and tasty. My favorite was the yellow lentils with garlic. There was AMPLE injera available and the tang from the fermented tef (tortilla like crepe gluten-free bread) was a delightful compliment to the flavors and spiciness. We felt the warmth of the proprietors and the beautiful ethnicity of the food through their interactions with us. It was a beautiful, filling, flavorful, satisfying meal.

A True Taste of Ethiopia in Arizona!

From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted with the warm, welcoming hospitality that Ethiopian culture is known for. The restaurant’s atmosphere is cozy yet vibrant, with traditional music and beautiful décor that instantly transports you to Addis Ababa.

The food was absolutely outstanding. The injera was soft, fresh, and perfectly tangy, and the variety of wot dishes was a flavorful journey—each stew rich in spices and depth. The doro wot was tender and savory, with just the right amount of heat, and the misir wot had that comforting, earthy taste that makes you want to keep eating long after you’re full. Vegetarians and meat lovers alike will find something to love here.

What truly sets this place apart is the care and authenticity in every bite. You can tell the recipes are made with love and passed down through generations. The coffee ceremony was a beautiful experience—not just a drink, but a cultural ritual, filling the air with the rich aroma of freshly roasted beans.

Whether you’re new to Ethiopian cuisine or a lifelong fan, this restaurant is a must-visit. It’s more than just a meal—it’s a cultural experience you’ll remember and want to share with...

My husband and I chose this place due to the great reviews and wanting for a long time to try ethiopian food. We went recently and unfortunately didn't have the same experience as others. We ordered the lamb tips..sambosa and vegi platter w/ awaze. So we get there waited about 15-20min for food to arrive. Looked good but the lamb tip portion was small for the price..it was bland and tough..the vegi.platter cold..the heat came from the excess jalapeno in the awaze was good but cold as well. My sambosa we ordered never came;oversight of waiter. Then when we got our can soda it was luke warm and whats funny the guy got it out the cooler. Then to top it off when I got home and looked at receipt I was charged about a buck more for this vegi platter w/ awaze; menu said 19 charged 20..I gave 3 stars for presentation and friendly service. I feel this restaurant just had a bad day. Anyone who has been in food and beverage line of business knows that can happen from time to time..I do believe in supporting my people and I had to be honest. I want them to continue to...
