Excellent experience. It’s restaurant week and date night, a great combination. We had reservations and in my typical style, well 70% of the time, we were 10 minutes late. We called and no worries, they held our reservation. Love that they offer self-parking without even seeing a valet. I’m always a bit embarrassed to tell them that I prefer to self park, but I don’t like someone I don’t know driving my 500hp car, Ferris Bueller flashbacks. The resort is beautiful. Even walking in from the parking garage is extremely classy. See picture. When the elevator reaches the 5th floor it opens directly into the foyer of the restaurant. It’s like arriving at a private penthouse, really cool.
The inside is extremely well decorated, modern, spacious and beautiful. Hostess was super friendly and sat us up against the floor to ceiling glass wall overlooking the city from up on Camelback Mountain, the view was phenomenal, city lights as far as you can see. See pics. All the tables are set beautifully, candle, Pinot wine glasses, full settings. Nice! We grabbed a Tito’s and soda along with a Beam and Seven, great start and went nicely with unlimited homemade fresh warm salted rolls with muffin like tops and homemade butter. Mmmmm!
During restaurant week, we paid $44 per person and each selected from a starter, an entree and a dessert. Check out the special restaurant-week menu picture. We started with the Warm Green Asparagus Salad and the Longevity Noodles. Asparagus was served cold and par cooked, a little smoky, covered in delicious sauce and seasonings. The Noodles were fantastic. 4 grilled shrimp, ginger consommé, homemade al dente noodles, greens, delicious! The menu didn’t say it came with cilantro, which I hate, and they graciously replaced it without even a blink. Super well handled and the manager even came to check on us, no worries. Starters were great! I would normally not order a sirloin steak in any restaurant, but it was the only steak on the restaurant week menu, so we both gave it a shot. So glad we did! One was rare and the other was medium rare, both cooked perfectly, juicy, warm and probably the best sirloin steak I’ve ever had. Typically not a terrific cut of meat, but these were excellent. We also ordered a side of wild mushrooms, they were incredible, not trenched in any kind of butter, garlic or other sauce, the natural flavors shined through and they were terrificThe Japanese eggplant was phenomenal, relatively soft, lightly smoky, fresh and flavorful. See the pics. Dessert was the “chocolate cake” which turned out to be a chocolate lava cake with caramel ice cream and a candied Brulé crisp, fantastic! Mine was carrot cake pie. Never heard of it, but how can you go wrong with carrot cake that’s also a pie?! Lemon cream cheese frosting served with a sweet carrot reduction sauce. Oh, and toasted coconut ice cream! It was phenomenal! Soft, warm, rich, creamy,....mmmmmm! Check out the pics.
Service was excellent. We wanted for nothing and were promptly, yet unobtrusively taken care of by about 4 people plus our server. Everyone was extremely friendly and professional. Very well done!
Overall, this was a terrific value at $44 per person. Bill was $126 including a couple drinks and all. Would it be a 5 star review at $250? Probably not, but this was great. It’s not Kai, but I don’t think it tries to be. It’s high-end, classy, comfortable, modern, clean with fantastic views overlooking an amazing property with high quality food and excellent service. Couldn’t ask for much more.
I would absolutely return and recommend...
Read moreI just wanted to write about my experience at J&G Steakhouse. My mom is visiting from Wisconsin, and we wanted to take her out for a nice birthday dinner and were excited to take her to J&G. The lady at the check-in desk was wonderful, as usual, and welcomed us. My husband and I have dined at J&G multiple times so she recognized us and was warm and welcome. I thought it would be a good indication of the rest of our time there, but that wasn’t the case. Our waiter was really bad, when he initially came to take our order, we said we would need another minute; he came back approximately 20 minutes later. Throughout the evening, we barely saw him, and toward the end of our meal, once our plates were cleared, and he knew we were finished and ready to go, we sat there for probably another 20-30 minutes waiting for our check. It was so bad that we contemplated getting up and asking the front desk for our check instead. We came in right at opening, and it was not that busy. The worst part is he was focused on the table right beside us, and it was pretty obvious he was showing them preferential treatment. My husband and I asked the waiter if the chicken Parmesan were enough for my husband and I to split since we were already getting an appetizer, he said yes, so we did. My husband’s portion was not good at all, and he was surprised that J&G would serve chicken like it. He had the dark chicken thigh portion, and I had the white chicken, he said the chicken thigh tasted like school cafeteria meat and he could barely stomach it. I had to give him some of my white chicken, so he would not be hungry. The waiter never came to ask how our food was, and was so absent that my husband had to resort to drinking ice water throughout the rest of the meal because he never came to check on refills. My mom ordered a glass of wine, once that was gone, he never asked if she wanted another one. I asked for a window seat in my reservation, which I made weeks ago, and we weren’t seated in front of the window. I have been planning my mom’s birthday dinner for weeks since she is only in town for a short time, and I was really hoping J&G would go above and beyond my expectations, I will definitely be picking a different place next time. Obviously the new management that took over the Phoenician do not care about their customers. I wrote them over a week ago with my experience and they never responded, the old management cared about the service they provided and if there was a problem, they reached out and did things to rectify the situation so they wouldn't...
Read moreBeautiful restaurant! We went there for our 1st wedding anniversary, and sat on the patio. Views are lovely, atmosphere was great. A hand-written card from the Manager was a really neat touch.
Service was PERFECT, and I can't stress this enough! I am particularity picky, having worked in a five diamond resort for 10 years, 4 of which were in fine restaurants, so I always notice more things than my company cares for. :) Our server was very attentive, knowledgeable of the menu, both personable and professional, but he was not hovering over us too much. There is nothing I find more annoying (and this normally happens in fine restaurants), than your server making your entire evening into his/her recital, or asking how your food is before you even had the chance to taste it. Everyone at the restaurant we interacted with greeted us with a warm smile, and was helpful. Timeliness of service was impeccable: table was cleared on time, courses went out just on time, but not too soon to make us feel rushed.
Food was also lovely. Tuna tartar looked beautiful, and my husband liked it. I had the squash soup, which was so flavorful, and the presentation was great. It breaks my hart that I could not have steak, as I like mine medium rare, but am pregnant. That's all right, I lived vicariously trough my husband, and my fish was delicious. He says his steak was phenomenal: perfectly cooked and seasoned. I tried the sauces (they brought three different ones, as were indecisive), and all were great. The sides were delicious too. The only thing I did not love, was the side of mac n' cheese, but this comes from the self-professed mac n' cheese snob (I really prefer strong creamy cheeses, and I feel cheddar is derived from some sort of plastic).
Prices were OK for a restaurant of this rating, and especially considering the generous portions. Their most expensive steak is the Porterhouse ($60.00), and it is absolutely HUGE (24 oz). Priced and portioned for two really.
Deserts was beautifully presented, (we received complimentary carrot cake). Though I am not a huge fan of carrot cake, this one was delicious. I also liked the mango and carrot sorbet on it (which I think they are making from scratch, and the carrot one was brilliant).
All in all, great restaurant, well worth the price and I highly recommend...
