Tonight is the second time that I've gotten food from Thai Basil in Ahwatukee, and I have to say that I'm generally just not that impressed. Some menu items are better than others, as with any restaurant, but tonight's experience was sub-par even considering that. I ordered online via their website and picked it up after work. The prices for the food were reasonable, though I passed on the $4.00 Thai iced tea (yikes!).
I ordered some spring rolls, pineapple fried rice, "spicy noodles," and mee krob. The spring rolls and their sauce were good - no complaints there. The pineapple fried rice was decent, but had kind of a strange burned smell to it. The spicy noodles were edible, but despite their name, they had absolutely zero spice to them whatsoever, instead just tasting greasy and bland (perhaps it's the fault of their online ordering system for not having an option to choose different spice levels like other places, but I mean, c'mon...it's in the name!). Finally, I specifically ordered the mee krob with "NO chicken," as I'm a vegetarian. I should have checked it before I left the restaurant, because when I got home and opened it up, it was full of chicken bits. Fortunately, I was able to easily pick them out, but they shouldn't have been there in the first place. The mee krob was also lacking the "cubed bell pepper" that was mentioned on the menu.
Overall, they've got some decent stuff if you're careful with what you're ordering, but I'll be sticking with Thai Delight or Chanpen...
Read moreThis is the most unprofessional and deceiving experience I have had in a long time. The service is awful. The old lady that sat us down was eating with her hands at the first table you encounter when enter the restaurant. No greetings... just a sour face ALL the time... makes you feel like you are bothering her. The service is very slow... The server made sure all the tables that just ate were re-set before taking our order... 20 minutes went by easily, thanks god we were a group of 5 and had some chatting to do. Food... my wife and I went for lunch of Saturday and it was excellent. Today, THE WORST FOOD ever. I order a dish that turn out to be all noddles 2 pity pieces of beef and 1 green onion... food around the table was the equivalent to food prepared by a freshman in his second day away from home. No one stopped by the table after dropping the dishes, so nobody knew how bad the food was, and therefore no solution could be provided to us to make our experience a little better. In all fairness, Food can be amazing or a mess, the service is consistently bad to say the least. I WILL NOT COME BACK. There is plenty of good food AND...
Read moreAte there with some friends the other night and the curry was really good. Their thai hot was spicier than most other Thai places I've been to, and that makes me really happy. :) I love the veggies they added. I wish my Panang curry had some thai basil leaves in it though, that's one of my favorite parts of that dish, and most other places have that in there.
One part kind of made me uneasy: We got a bottle of wine. They gave us a bottle that had the label ripped off, and was replaced with their restaurant's label that had no year on it. My fiance didn't actually see them open the bottle, the cork looked really gross to me, and I suspect the wine was actually watered down. It had a similar weird aftertaste to their water. I've never been anywhere where they don't open wine in front of you, and I've never tasted "wine" quite like that... I had major stomach problems the whole next day, which may or may not be related. It kind of broke my trust for the place, so I don't think I could eat there again, which is a shame, because the...
