Ordered Udon noodle, Bento with Salmon and Tempura plus 6 pieces of sushi. Bill was $65.00. Expensive, hmmmm you be the judge. What about quality, was it worth it? Well, lets look at each dish...sushi was pretty good, and fresh, I'd give it a 4.7 out of 5 for the 'fish' only, the rice on the other hand was a 3 out of 5 tops. I know Japanese rice because I cook and eat 'real Japanese' food everyday for the past 15 years. Bento with salmon and tempura....salmon was good, as good as grilled salmon is expected to be 5 out of 5. The tempura on the other hand, had way too much tempura batter, makes the pieces look huge...Americans like that I guess. But I'm not so impressed with eating 70% tempura and 30% shrimp. I give the tempura a 2 out of 5. The Miso soup was your typical Japanese restaurant instant Miso soup. Now on to the Udon, noodles cooked about right, the broth was way too weak -and- the mushrooms were not shiitake mushrooms. No no no, do not substitute shiitake mushrooms for American mushrooms, why bother in that case. I give the Udon a 2 out of 5 tops. However, all in all, authentic looking Japanese restaurants are rare, plus the customary 'irasshaimase' greeting and the 'arigato gozaimasu' thank you at the end turns it into a novel experience. And that it is, a novelty experience, not a food experience. So 3 out of 5 stars...
Read moreSushi nakano in Ahwatukee is very small first off, which very much gives it a hole in the wall kind of vibe. I know that's not something that everybody enjoys, but it makes me think of it's that dive bar with the absolute best food in town. We went at 7:45 on a Tuesday night and while there was one available table, I imagined it would be difficult to get some seating at a more popular dining time.
This was our second time going, with the first being 6 years ago. I remember enjoying the food last time, we sat at the bar and the chef was preparing some kind of giant fish head right in front of us. I actually didn't mind that at all I thought it was kind of cool, but my husband really did not enjoy that experience at all. So we ended up not going back. By chance we happen to go back last night, and omg we're so glad we did. We opted to set it a table for obvious reasons. But just like last time we were there the food was absolutely amazing. We've gone to at least six sushi restaurants in town and in other cities probably another 10, and that was the best gyoza we've ever had. My husband who usually does not finish a Las Vegas roll ate the whole thing, which was absolutely huge, and also said it was the best roll he's ever had. My salmon nagiri was delicious with thick cuts of salmon. Absolute five star food, so good, can't...
