I've been here many times as it's right around the corner from where we live. I go mostly for breakfast.
Apparently it was awarded Best Breakfast in Michigan by "MLive's statewide entertainment reporter John "Gonzo" Gonzalez and his "food coach" and retired state prison cook Mike Jensen.
....a prison cook? When was the last time anyone raved about prison food? Have I stumbled into an alternate universe of opposites? To be fair, Anna's food is better than prison food...not that I've ever been, but again, maybe I'm missing something.
I was confused about the best breakfast sign, so stopped in and had maybe the worst service and food to date. At best, this place is a greasy spoon. Which, don't get me wrong, I like my share of these types of places....but best breakfast in Michigan? No way.
Everything has always just been "par", but I was with my 2-year old for my last visit and had poor service. It wasn't even busy! First of all, there seemed to be poor communication between the wait and kitchen staff. I got my food first and had to wait until my daughter got hers 5 minutes later. Who can't serve 2 customers at the same time? It's one thing if my daughter got her food first. I've just never been served my meal BEFORE my child. The waitress was flaky and airy, my toast was burnt, I asked for sausage, but got bacon AND sausage, and both were beyond greasy. Nothing was quite right.
Why complain about getting my food first and getting MORE than I asked for? Simply because it wasn't what I asked for. Either the waitress wrote it down wrong, or the kitchen just messed it up. Regardless, that's not typical in a well run establishment like Wolfgang's or Real Food Cafe.
As of right now I have no reason to go back. With places like Real Food Cafe not too far away, you're much better off there. The decor is nice, service and food is always spot on, and the bakery case looks amazing.
So,if you live on the NE side of town, or find yourself there looking for good breakfast, please don't be fooled by the sign or "hype". Go to Real Food...
Read moreToday we received the very poor service at Anna's House in Grand Rapids. We seated ourselves because they sign said too. Shortly a server, Bridget, came to our table and took our drink order. When the drinks were brought to the table one coffee was supposed to be pumpkin coffee but it was just regular. Also the other two individuals at the table asked for water and did not receive this till at least 15 minutes later when we had to ask for it again. First we ordered for our daughter and her order came in a reasonable time. The other three orders were ordered and we waited 45 minutes, Bridget did not seem to think it was strange that our food was not up yet. So we asked someone walking by. Then Bridget came back and said she forgot to enter our order and we needed to tell her our order again. She did say that she had ordered the red velvet pancakes. This was clearly a lie when the pancakes did not come out before the other food. After taking our order for the second time, she came to our table and said "Are you happy now?" It was very snarky. Then she did say she was sorry. We just wanted our food so we could make it to our daughters volleyball game on time. When the bill finally came to the table after we had to ask for it, the orders were put together even though we had asked for separate bills. Then our coupons were not honored as they should have been. When asked about this Bridget said that some coupons say you can only have one coupon per table. The hash browns were extremely overcooked. Most restaurants that care about their customers and about return business, would offer some sort of discount in a situation like this where the server has forgotten to enter an order for 45 minutes. It was a bit excessive and very little remorse was shown. We did not sign the bill for this transaction because the correct amount was not calculated. Also the food gave two people in my family an upset stomach. Not worth the wait, go to other better...
Read moreGood burger. Great fries.
Anna’s Burger - $15.25: Cheesy! Lots of cheese! The American and Swiss cheeses were good and almost look like an egg on the burger. The two burger patties were cooked to medium or medium-well and very juicy good! The lettuce was crisp and fresh, but huge and difficult to eat the way it was topped. The onions and tomato were delicious and complimented well. It was a bit sloppy to eat (maybe a bit too much burger sauce?). The bun complimented well. Overall, it was delicious.
Fries (free with the burger): Some of the best fries I’ve had. Everything was well balanced. The battered fries are medium cut, seasoned and cooked perfectly. They seemed a bit on the dark side, but the flavor was not impacted at all.
Gourmet Hot Chocolate - $4.75: Standard. Settled towards the end. Good whipped topping. Nice cup.
Service: Amazingly great but slightly delayed. He was very helpful and super kind. The burger came out VERY quickly after we ordered it, but it did take a minute to have our order taken and to get our bill (we were in a little bit of a hurry, though). It was a busy time.
Atmosphere: Very bright colors and really cheerful. It is a mix between 50’s diner and grandma’s house. There were booths, tables with chairs, and even a breakfast bar. It was clean, organized, and well thought out.
Conclusion: I’d recommend their burger and HIGHLY recommend their fries.
