Alright, let's dive into Smiley's Gyros and Beef in Plainfield! I recently had the chance to experience this spot with its seemingly endless menu. Conveniently situated right on Route 59, Smiley's definitely boasts accessibility. Walking in, you're immediately struck by the sheer variety on offer. Their namesake gyros and Italian beef are clearly a focus, with options ranging from the classic sandwich to fiesta and chicken versions, plus gyro plates for those wanting the components laid out. Moving into the beef territory, they've got a solid lineup. The Italian beef sandwich is a must-try for any Chicago area spot, and they also offer Italian sausage, a combo, and a beef and sausage mix. For those craving steak, the ribeye is an interesting addition to a fast-food style menu. Burger lovers have plenty to choose from too, with everything from a classic hamburger to a patty melt, quarter pounder, double, junior, a "Gyros Burger" (intriguing!), and even a Black Angus option. But wait, there's more! Smiley's ventures beyond the typical beef and gyro fare with tacos, tostadas, burritos, and quesadillas. Chicken and fish sandwiches broaden the appeal, and their sub selection, from BLTs to Reubens and pulled pork, is substantial. Vienna Beef hot dogs and their variations (chili, corn, Polish with fries) cater to the hot dog aficionados. Even the salad options are more diverse than you might expect, with Julia, toss, and Greek salads available. And for a sweet finish, you can indulge in Greek baklava or Eli's cheesecake. Now, let's talk about the food itself. I can attest that the quality is indeed very good. The portions are genuinely enormous – you definitely get your money's worth in terms of quantity. However, this does contribute to the fact that it's a little on the pricier side for what's essentially a fast-food establishment. Here's my breakdown: Pros: Massive Menu: Seriously, there's something for everyone here. You could eat here multiple times and still find something new to try. Very Good Food: Quality ingredients and well-prepared dishes. Enormous Portions: Come hungry, because they don't skimp! Convenient Location: Right on IL 59, easy to access. Cons: A Little Expensive: The generous portions come with a slightly higher price tag than typical fast food. Overall: Smiley's Gyros and Beef is a solid choice when you're looking for a satisfying and substantial meal with a huge variety of options. While it might be a tad pricier than your average fast-food joint, the quality and quantity of the food definitely make it worth considering, especially if you're really hungry. If you're in Plainfield and craving just about anything, Smiley's is...
Read moreA few weeks ago I was out running some errands and my wife calls me asking to pick her something up and NOT a burger. We've lived in Plainfield since 2012 and although I've seen Smiley's there and have driven by it literally thousands of times going to and from work, I never stopped by until that day. I pulled in the parking lot and parked between them and another small eatery a few doors down.
Calling my wife, I wanted her to pick a number 1 (left place) or 2 (Smiley's) Well she didn't answer her phone and since I ate already I was trying to figure which she may want more... BBQ or Italian (She does NOT like Gyro's) While looking at both storefronts, I noticed something that drew my attention; a simple little sign that read something like, "We know there are a lot of other places you can eat at, Thank You for choosing ours."
Guess who won... I got my wife a cheesy beef and she loved it. Smiley's is a nice little place, very clean and tidy and is run by friendly staff and is what I believe to be a family. Their prices are fair and they have a large menu which I kinda find to be a bit of a turn off... I feel a smaller menu is easier to maintain and makes it better to concentrate more on a few items instead of spreading out, but hey, that's my opinion... I saw on their extensive menu that they serve burritos... Now let me tell you, I love Mexican food!!! I could, and it seems do, live on burritos and I'm very picky about them... maybe even to a fault.
Part Two: A few days ago I decided to go there and get me a Smiley's Steak Burrito and I did NOT regret it one bit. All of the ingredients were well proportioned, very tasty and fresh. As I grown my own peppers and bottle my own hot sauces I fully appreciate spicy sauces and asked for their hand made hot sauce to compliment my burrito. When asking a cook what peppers are used, he told me arbol chilies.
De arbol chilies a basically a slightly milder version of cayenne peppers, but what they are missing in the overall heat of the cayenne's, they far exceed in flavor with a very distinct smoky taste and are still over 5 times hotter than jalapeno peppers which in reality I find rather plain tasting...Two thumbs up for that choice of peppers and two thumbs up for the overall service and quality. I highly recommend you...
Read moreSince we’ve moved in the area we’ve been a regular at Smileys. Even supported them during the pandemic when they raised their prices. We have a family of four and usually spend about $50 each time. We ordered a gyro plate and asked for just sauce and meat— we get home (which was 15 min away) we learned our order was incorrect and missing the sauce. Seems minor but when you only wanted meat and sauce it’s kind of the main ingredient that makes a gyro. We called and talked to the girl who took our order and told her that the order was incorrect. She gave us the option to come back in to get the sauce but we declined since again it was a 15 min drive. She put us on hold and then told us there was nothing else they could do after talking to her manager. The very next day, my wife stopped in to talk about the incorrect order. The owner/manager told her that it was her responsibility to check her order to make sure it’s correct then accused her of lying about the missing items. The level of accountability and customer service is poor! The fact that she was accused of lying is super offensive and unfortunately we won’t be returning. Again this might seem minor to you all as a business but there’s just a certain way to...
