R & J Bakery — Restaurant in Pomona

I ordered my two year old cake here, I choose this place because of the reviews. I disregarded the ugly location because I was hoping the cakes here would be wonderful and worth all the trouble. First off the lady who I ordered the cake with was not very friendly and seemed upset, I asked her if they used fresh fruit on the cakes and she said..." Yes, fresh fruit." I asked her to let me taste the frosting they use on the cakes because I wanted to make sure it wasn't too sweet... Frosting taste was good so I decided to go ahead and take a chance and ordered a half sheet cake filled with strawberry and pineapple $27.00. She asked me for a cash $10. Deposit on the cake ( very odd but, what ever.) I picked up the cake a few days later. Okay cake looked good externally, frosting was not too sweet but... Cake it's self was fluffy but kinda dry she used canned pineapple which had absolutely no flavor the strawberries where just a few!!! I was so disappointed and upset this cake was actually one of the worst tasting cakes I've had it tasted like fluffy dried cake and frosting that's it! Horrible cake! It had such little moisture that when cutting it it would separate! ...And just to think that I left her a tip too... Well, never...

I ordered a cake on Sunday for my dad's birthday and I asked specifically for a coconut green cake with fresh fruit on top. I asked for it to be ready on Tuesday. The lady kept saying Wednesday and I kept correcting her. My dad use to buy my birthday cakes here for years. Hence I wanted to get him a cake here, a trip from memory lane... but no, the lady who took the order was rude and even though I even asked her to repeat my order back to me and she confirmed it was a coconut green cake with fresh fruit on top, that was not what I got. I got a round vanilla cake with coconut filling and I told her that wasn't what we talked about on the phone and she said that only the big cakes were green and that I should've ordered a big cake not a small one. I told her what was not what we agreed on. I still paid for the cake but I will not be coming back, or at least I'll have my dad order cakes, they'll probably be nicer if the person speaks vietnamese 😑 Lady with the short hair was rude and still had the audacity to forget the pick up date (good thing I called to confirm in the morning), and to tell me I was wrong when she was the one...

So I decided to try this bakery for my son's bday cake. As a child I remember my mother purchasing this type of cake for me wen I was a child and I loved it. It is different from traditional bakeries. Overall the cake was good. Frosting not bad, cake taste and texture not bad. Was disappointed that the strawberries were over ripe, so they didn't taste good at all. Kinda sad that the owner/Baker would knowingly still use them. Also note that I was willing to try this place bcuz of it's reviews/rating. U walk inside this bakery which looks very old and outdated. Made me feel sketchy. However their grade was an A which was posted on the window. So I thought hey it's worth a try. I had high expectations for this place. Not sure if I will be a returning customer due to the over ripe fruit. Hope this helps whoever is reading this, bcuz I sure didn't know wat to expect.. OVERALL CAKE WAS "OKAY". Can't forget that they cover side of cake with almonds. Which makes it more appealing. Hopefully next time they will use the freshest and...
