Truth be told, I don't know what this place used to be in years past, but it seems to have fallen slightly off the high perch it once sat upon. Let me be upfront, I have no gripes or complaints about this establishment. In fact, over the last ten years, I have been here many times (as I do live very close by). Furthermore, I am endlessly grateful for the fact that they remain open 24/7, as well as they do serve a killer (&huge) French toast breakfast in the middle of the night, which I have supped upon many a times. Additionally, I have not once ever had an issue with service or food quality, and I have left happy each & every time I've gone; dine-in or pick-up. Considering all of this, one could rightfully say that this establishment deserves five stars and, well, maybe it does. However, unfortunately for them, despite myself having moved (a decade ago) to a place that is close by, it still took me quite awhile to get in there for the first time. That said, I should disclose that it was for YEARS, that I had heard ENDLESS legendary Dandee Donut tales. I'm talking stories that claimed to put any & all others who dare to fry donuts to shame, from 'Voodoo Donuts' in California to 'Federal Donuts' in Philadelphia to '2 Five Daughters Bakery' in Nashville & any/all others across the nation & in between. Unfortunately, while these claims may have been founded on solid ground years back, that is no longer the case. Truthfully..Dandee Donuts makes a fine donut & maybe even a slightly or near exceptional one, however they are far from being the donut mavericks that so many (have & still do) claim them to be. Their donuts are slightly larger than normal, usually pretty fresh & often a little outside or different than traditional donut fare you'd find at most chains. However, the truth of the matter ALSO is that I think that (either) the days of tall tales & local legends are long gone or just that after 20 or 30 (or however many years it is that they've been said by so many to be South Florida food destination), the owners have finally just decided to take it a bit easier (which they might rightly deserve at this point) and, well, it does seem to me just a bit that (like now-a-days) they're just 'mailing it in' (so to speak). **Case in point, after Dandee recently sold off their Hollywood location, the new buyer & owner (some guy from NY who has since also now changed the name of that location to "Hollywood Donuts") started "chef"-ing out any & all-those triple-decker, 2000+ calorie, meal-in-a-donut monstrosities that which you might expect (&/or maybe had seen) from back in the original Dandee Donut days (although, I truly don't know if such stories are or were ever true). Regardless, this place is still great, its people are wonderful, the prices are fair & while you may not end up receiving some ultra-premium fare you once witnessed on Food Network, there is (also) something quite nice about not having to shell out $8-$14 per single donut. In conclusion, so long as you don't expect that which only very few (& far in between) ever really do, you'll certainly leave more than...
Read moreI tried a breakfast sandwich, just because I wanted to see what a non-donut breakfast item was like. I went with the steak, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich and it was fantastic! Forget about FiveBucks breakfast sandwiches! This was a great piece of steak cooked perfectly so that no bite was chewy. There was never a moment when i bit into the sandwich and all the meat came out because it was tough. Not the case here. It was really good. I'd definitely order it again.
Now on to the donuts. What can I say! They had an amazing selection of donuts at 7:45am on Tuesday. Basically every donut you see on their webpage was in stock - in plentiful stock - on the baking racks. I haven't had a bad donut from this place. They are amazing. My only wish is that they'd open a location in Asheville, NC! With donuts this amazing and this fresh around, I don't know why anybody would ever bother with Dunkin' I just don't get that fascination.
UPDATED: Thanksgiving Day 11/23/23 I went to Dandee Donuts at about 8:15am on Thanksgiving Day and the place was slammed! Almost every seat at the counter was taken and the line was starting right at the door when you walk in. That being said, Mark was running the register along with other staff. There were multiple people behind the counter waiting on customers efficiently, effectively, and in such a friendly manner. I heard Christine wishing people a happy Thanksgiving as they were leaving. Overall, even though they were turning and burning in there at a quick pace, they still took time to give people that Dandee Donut friendly customer service they are known for. The donuts and coffee, as usual, were spot on. Mark and Chris have a top notch crew at all levels in this shop; it feels like they are a family working together, so there's been good team-building and it shows in everything from the food from the grill, the baking, the front counter service, to the cleanliness of the restaurant. Speaking of clean, they have a beautifully remodeled, spotless men's room. I'm sure the ladies' bathroom is just as outstanding.
A couple of things not to miss - their breakfast sandwiches are the best. The steak, egg, and cheese on a bagel (made in house) is killer. The steak is tender, cooked to perfection on the griddle, the eggs are fresh (not premade) and the sandwich is huge. They put every other breakfast joint to shame with this sandwich alone, but they do lunch sandwiches, soups, and so much more.
If you're looking for an old-time donut shop with style, culture, and the friendly feeling of a diner, give Dandee Donuts a try. It's clear from my observations over the past few days that they have a group of locals who are regulars. You can't find this kind of experience of an old-fashioned donut shop/diner any more - except at this Dandee Donuts! Ain't happenin' at Flunkin' Donuts for sure; some of them are so soulless, they only have...
Read moreWe've been driving past this place time and again while here in South Florida and wondered how good the donuts might be. On Saturday morning, I decided that it was time to check it out. I went at approximately 11:00 AM and was surprised to see that their parking lot was overflowing, (that's a good sign just how popular a restaurant is.) I only had to wait about 7 minutes until a space opened up so don't become impatient if you've never been and drive off to 'another ' donut shop. Upon entering, I was hit like a freight train by the mouth watering smells of donuts, coffee and cooked breakfast. They were busier than a bunch of centipedes in a toe counting contest but the staff was handling the customers and business like seasoned pros, (and politely which is rare in South Florida.) I decided to order a half dozen donuts only because the size of their donuts are larger than 'another' popular donut shop. Let me tell you, it is CHALLENGING to decide which flavors because they ALL looked delicious. Luckily, I was waited on by a girl with glasses and she knew which ones are favorites by other customers. I chose glazed, chocolate, (cake, no icing.) and jelly. She said I had one more to select, (bakers half dozen.) and I asked for her help. She offered the sour cream which she said is their most popular. I paid, thanked her and walked out with their very sturdy cardboard box in hand. Once I got home, it took all the willpower I had to not dive right into them. I waited for my fiancee to wake up and she was very excited to find out I brought home donuts from the place we've been talking about. The sour cream donut was our first choice and let me assure you, if you like donuts, it is undeniably the BEST donut we've ever had of it's kind. The taste explodes in your mouth like fireworks going off on a Fourth of July finale show! The glazed donuts followed after and they were absolutely great. This morning, the chocolate and raspberry jelly followed, bringing an end to the best donut experience ever. Dandee Donuts rivals our favorite Hot n Fresh from KK but they are a different type anyway. Prices are VERY reasonable for these donuts, ($7.99 for a bakers 1/2 dozen.) I want to go back again for more and also for us to try their hot breakfast. If you've never been to Dandee Donuts, it needs to happen. If you don't, you are sorely...
