A bummer for me to give this place 2 stars. The food, environment, and usually the service, is great.
I go here with my mother frequently, and have introduced a large amount of friends and family to the place.
Today, I took my mother here for lunch, who says she ordered a veggie and avocado omelet. She'd been talking about the omelette all morning, excited. We sat down, and when the order showed up, it was a BLT. Not concerned in the slightest because I know the service here is usually excellent, I take the sandwich to the front counter, and explain the situation.
The young lady, who is usually very kind, tells me it is impossible for my mother to have ordered the omelette, because she asked for multigrain bread. I say "doesnt the omelette come with toast?" She says "yes", so I'm not sure how the word "multigrain" being said nullifies the possibility of an omelette with multigrain toast being ordered.
Then, the young lady just kinda looks at me and says "sorry" and tells me my mother was "confused". I guess shes being nice but the sorry doesnt really mean anything if you can't help me get this omelette.
Now it is entirely possible my mother really DID order the wrong thing. I don't think she did, she's a sharp woman, but it is entirely possible. That being said, I've sent a lot of business to this cafe. I've sent family visiting from out of town, friends, people I work with, etc. As a local, I have supported the Fleur De Lis Cafe frequently for a while (to the point of at least one employee remembering my name), and I tip cash well above 20% everytime i order. Even on the $1 coffee refills.
Up until recently, I worked in kitchen and cafes most my life. At each of these places, we would've made the omlette. That is the industry standard.
Im sure the proprietors and managers of this cafe know more about the service industry than myself. But potentially severing a relationship with a supportive local over a $15 omlette just seems like bad business. I will not reccomend Fleur De Lis going forward.
I suggest Twisted Croissant or Helen Bernhard for baked goods and coffee, and New deal Cafe for a proper breakfast-- all local...
Read moreThe website and reviews made this look promising for a birthday brunch for my husband. We're new to Portland so are trying new restaurants. I was a little disappointed that it was only order at the counter and grab a table but it was crowded and I took that as a good sign. We ordered breakfast, cinnamon roll french toast and an omelette with coffee, and found a table. There were three types of coffee 'available' at the self-service; two of the pots were empty and the other was lukewarm and tasted terrible. Thinking that they might quickly replace the empty pots, I mentioned it to one of the workers. She offered to make me an americano but I thought a coffee shop surely would have replacements readily available. She came out a few minutes later, took the two empty containers and checked the one that was lukewarm. Apparently she felt it was 'good enough' because she left it. We waited for the new coffee to appear while we waited for our food, while we ate our food, and as we bussed our table. The other coffee options did not appear while we were there. The food was mediocre. The cinnamon roll french toast had very little actual cinnamon but a lot of sugar. I expected better from a place that first and foremost identifies itself as a bakery. The omelette was supposed to have mushrooms, spinach, and blue cheese but primarily had mushrooms with very little of the other fillings. My husband said the potatoes were good. The employees seemed irritated that customers were there, particularly when our food was brought to us. I was sorry afterwards that I had already put a tip on the charge when I ordered. I think it's crowded there because it appears to be the only coffee / breakfast shop with sufficient seats and free wifi in the immediate area. I definitely do not recommend it. We...
Read moreI stopped in today with my girlfriend as a belated anniversary date. I’m a vegan and asked about the avocado toast to make sure there were no animal products as toppings etc. The cashier told me the bread was not vegan and that none of their bread was vegan. This confused me as they advertise a vegan sandwich, so I mentioned this to double check that I couldn’t get the avocado toast on that kind of bread. She told me only the inside of the sandwich was vegan and that she doesn’t make the menu. I assured her I knew that she wasn’t in control of those things but asked if I could speak with the person who did so as to not put her in the middle of anything. We ordered some coffee and she grabbed I presume the owner. I filled her in on my confusion and while interrupting me she told me all of their bread was vegan. She asked me what I thought would be in the bread that wasn’t vegan. I said I wasn’t sure but had been advised by her staff member that it wasn’t vegan. She again corrected me and said it was, I restated my initial confusion and concern about them selling a vegan sandwich without vegan bread (to provide context of why I had wanted to talk to her instead of just the cashier) when she cut me off and said “If that was true it would’ve been caught like 19 years ago” and pretty abruptly walked away. I was pretty stunned by this interaction altogether and the lack of customer service or even just basic manners in a small local business located in such a residential area. The cherry on top was they forgot to put the vanilla syrup in my latte which they charge for. Overall, really poor experience and I definitely...
