Used to live in the neighborhood and walk by many times, including watching it get built. My date had been there before and I was eager to go! We set ourselves, as is the custom I think.
We got served almost immediately by a wonderful server from Shanghai. Not Japan! LOL! She was friendly and efficient. For example when my friend said he didn't want a refill of a drink she said OK maybe next time! She checked back several times and was sweet each time. We got there just before dinner -5pm-and the place was filling up as we left at 6pm. There wasn't as much variety as I thought there would be. But, as the dinner hour approach the variety got greater. So come at a busy time. The little cake desserts were very geleé Asian tasting. More Chinese I think. Delicious. Also there were sesame ball desserts that are also Chinese, I think. They're delicious. I loved the tempura pot stickers (Pot stickers are Chinese, too!) The tea was excellent. Sadly, I used fake sweetener. Happily, this is one of the few Asian restaurants i've been to that had decent fake sugar. They had Splenda or at least something like Splenda. Very happy with that. I know this is weird, but that is one of the things that will bring me back to an Asian restaurant. The only reason I'm not giving the place five stars is because when we got there two waitresses were sitting down eating and our poor Shanghai waitress was too busy to be on the floor by herself. Luckily, she is good at her job! (Even if it's your lunch break, when it's busy you jump up and help! I've worked in restaurants and bars my...
Read moreI was a regular customer, given I have 2 appts per week in the area. I've been understanding in the past, being served tea in a dirty cup and mischarged for my food on a handful of occasions. Today they didn't have food on the conveyor belt and they were having folks order from the menu. I decided to try a bowl of udon ($11) which I understood to come with a couple of pieces of tempera shrimp and a couple pieces of tempera broccoli, just like every other sushi place I've ordered it at. They brought my udon and then a bunch of tempera on a separate plate that I wasn't expecting. I ate my udon and the shrimp that came with it and a couple of pieces of broccoli from the tempura plate. Then, as I'm finishing up and getting ready to pay the bill and leave, they tried to bring me more food I didn't order! At the register she wanted to charge me for all this food I didn't order/eat. I relented and said I'd pay $11 for the udon and shrimp, and a little extra for the couple of pieces of broccoli I ate, which she felt was valued at $9!!!! So I paid the unfair bill and then told them they lost a regular customer. I was good for about $20-30/week when I came to eat after my appts, but now I'm going to find another restaurant worthy...
Read moreI have ordered take out, dine in, and delivery from Sushi Chiyo. By far my favorite sushi place in Portland. Dining in is nice there are options for booths or chairs and you can choose whatever you want off the conveyer belt, the sushi is made in the middle so you can actually watch it happening too. Take out and delivery are good and the travel containers are not messy, they are plastic so I’d love to see something biodegradable but it is cheap and affective so I’m not complaining too much. The food isn’t always 100% fresh but by no means is it bad or unsafe it just might be 8 minutes old or whatever. Workers do not speak very good english but well enough if you want to order of the menu you can. I’m so glad they’re still open after so many things failing in the same location!! Overall good experience, very tasty (my favorite is the...
