Kulfi in one word is simply amazing. It is delicious and creamy and everything you'd want from a ice cream type dessert. It is a specialized Indian style, however the restaurant Kulfi has almost lost that original design. I originally reviewed the other location that is now no longer open due to them focusing all their efforts in this one location. The bad parts are simply the location as someone coming from the suburban areas of Beaverton and Hillsborough. There's nothing enjoyable about going all the way into Central North Portland just for this type of dessert. They have mastered their craft but that still doesn't make it any more desirable to go here. The perfect case in point is that I've gone here twice in 3 years. Where is it? The location was more amicable this would be a more regularly occasioned visit if not monthly even sooner than that. It's strange because the largest Indian population the primary targets of this type of dessert is in the suburban areas, especially around Hillsboro. Aloha and Beaverton, due to employment at Nike and Intel and there really is no other competition in the area that has this level of consistency and flavor. If they move their business to that area they would probably triple if not quadruple profits. All that to say is that the location is fine. I personally don't like it. The actual options here are great, but a critique of them is that it seems like they're trying to be a smaller version of salt and spa, something that's so niche, but so premium that they kind of lose their focus. They're also competing with a place like salt and Sarah or 50 licks which doesn't even make sense to try. They already have a specialized needs market and their product really speaks for itself. If they would just Target their audience better and focus themselves, they would find that they don't have to compete in a location in Portland and they don't have to compare themselves to other successful businesses like salt and straw or 50 licks. I would easily go return here again, but as I mentioned before, the location is not amicable for me and my family. If you are local or nearby or at all interested or it's definitely worth checking out even when it's...
Read moreThere aren't quite enough words to express the passion / joy Gagan and Kiran have for Kulfi and what they've brought to the PDX community.
Whether you're looking for a sweet treat or looking to have your frown turned upside down, Kulfi is the perfect spot!
The intention they've put into this environment through their creation is palpable. The joy / happiness is contagious as soon as you walk in.
Their new location is bright, vibrant, open, and welcoming (matches everything they embody)!
I guarantee you'll need to make multiple visits because you're gonna want to try EVERYTHING. From homemade icecream to icepops, kulfi, falooda, etc. They've got a bit of everything!
Mastermind Kiran puts together WILD flavors, and they turn out incredible. Major Mango is one of my favorite icecreams while the Pista and Cookies & Cream Kulfi are to die for. Recently, I tried their Kunafa and went to heaven. It's the perfect blend of savory and sweet because of the marscapone cream base and then pistachios, rose, honey, crispy dough strips, etc. You have to try it.
It is one of my favorite spots in PDX and highly recommend checking it out. You'll be back...
Read moreTried the kulfi here hoping for a taste of home, but honestly, it was all pretty meh. Texture-wise, it was more like a frozen dessert bar than real kulfi, and the flavor just didnât hit the mark. It lacked that rich, dense, malai-like creaminess you get in India, and the mango flavour was too faint.
If youâve had kulfi from street vendors or sweet shops back in India, this will probably feel like a watered-down version. It wasnât terrible, but it definitely didnât satisfy the kulfi craving. Felt more like a generic ice cream trying to pass as something traditional.
I was really excited to try the rose falooda here, especially with all the hype surrounding this place, but honestly, it was a letdown. The falooda felt like diluted milk with barely any flavor. The ice cream was bland as well with a hint of rose. If you look closely at the rim of the glass, youâll notice how thin and transparent the milk is â not at all what youâd get from a proper falooda.
Maybe it was just an off day, but it certainly didnât live up to the expectations. For a place thatâs so hyped, I was expecting something a lot more authentic...
