First things first, I’m not a sandwich person. I am super picky about them, even though I’m usually not a picky eater. Actually, if I’m honest, I’m a bit of a trash panda when it comes to food. I will eat anything, really. HOWEVER— when it comes to sandwiches, it needs to be a club sandwich from a greasy spoon diner or something mind-blowingly good.
Better Half is that good. They also have an impressive selection that caters to herbivores and omnivores, which is really important when hanging out with friends in PDX, because everyone has Dietary Needs (including myself, if I am behaving well that day).
I love their cozy cafe atmosphere, too! It reminds me of the automat-style cafes in Germany— clean, efficient, but still homey and comfortable. Staff are friendly but not so much that it makes the line take ages.
Okay, but back to the food. I had the Italian with Mortadella (or Moat-a-delle, for fans of The Bear) and a pickle spear (duh), a cup of the tomato soup which sizzles with hints of lemongrass and is that… paprika oil maybe? It’s delightful. Did I mention the HOUSE MADE RANCH POTATO CHIPS? I should have led with that, because while I’m a picky sandwich eater, I’m a connoisseur of potato chips. They’re crunchy and substantial without being too thick- just crispy satisfying morsels of delightful potato at its very American best, what with the ranch seasoning and all.
Anyway, I don’t mind the $20 ish price tag on the sandwiches because they usually will feed me for two meals, or are shareable with a friend.
Better Half is the best sandwich shop in town, hands down. Don’t believe me? Ask Eater- I saw they were featured twice in the same month on two separate lists!...
Read moreI have been ordering from Better Half for a while and never truly had a bad experience. What drove me to submit a review today is their special BLT. Get one. Now.
I have had the Turkey, Chicken Salad, and BLT and love them all. My parter always goes for the Italian and keeps going back for it. I usually go right when they open for a lunch sandwich, for breakfast. Their house made chips and fries are fresh and seasoned nicely with dried herbs. The fry sauce is explosive with flavor.
The BLT is so worth the price. I love BLTs with a fiery passion but am always skeptical about ordering in from somewhere. My biggest critique of most BLTs that I don’t make myself is that there is never enough bacon. There is no problem of that here. If I was to fault the sandwich for anything is that the carrot-habanero jam over powers the pesto aioli so I...
Read moreI don’t live in Oregon but if I moved, it’d be solely for these sandwiches. I’m vegetarian and there are so many delicious options here to choose from (my personal favorite the roasted broccolini). The sandwiches are huge and generously stuffed with delicious and flavorful fillings. They also come with a small bag of homemade potato chips (and a pickle which I chose to ignore) but the chips seasoned amazingly and paired perfectly with my sandwich. They also have a gluten free bread option which tasted great (my mom has celiac disease- and is vegetarian- and she was pleasantly surprised with her options as she usually only has one, if any, meals to chose from). I highly recommend this casual and delicious sandwich spot if you’re...
