McMenamins Barley Mill Pub — Restaurant in Portland

I've tried McMenamins all over Oregon and this one was pretty similar to the rest. I think the best one is in Bend but the food and drinks at all of them is pretty consistent. We chose this place on a Saturday night because it was within walking distance and we had a group of around 10 people. We wanted warm food after drinking beer at the Ale Fest all day and of course, more beer. Our server was patient and really friendly while we all decided on what we wanted. One thing was for sure, we got two large orders of tots for the table! We asked for extra ranch because obviously you need to dip each one into ranch for the full flavor explosion to happen in your mouth. They always get their tots so crispy and not greasy which I love. We also got some Scooby snacks (mini corndogs). I don't usually eat hot dogs but they hit the spot after a day of drinking. A few bumps along the way consisted of a few people not receiving their drinks, ranch not being brought until the tots were gone and a few items running out after ordering. I had the crispy chicken wrap with honey mustard and could only eat half because it was a generous portion. I really liked the wrap but wish there had been more chicken inside. My order was messed up so I received tots instead of my salad but the salad was quick to come up after I asked the waitress about it.

We all enjoyed our food and hung out for a bit, admiring the Grateful Dead themed decor around us. They have a few pinball machines in the back and outdoor heaters if you want to sit outside. We came at 12:30 on a Friday, barely any other customers were there besides us. The waitress didn't ask how I'd like my burger, so I was surprised there was pink in it. I brought it back and told them if they could just remake the patty and leave the rest as-is, that would be fine. I didn't want to risk anything as I'm pregnant. They were nice enough about it. The plate had my pepperoncini and my daughter's since she didn't want hers.

They brought my burger back, completely remade, no pepperoncinis on the plate. Not a huge deal, but I wanted my spicy peppers! (Again, pregnant.) The lack of attention to details was disappointing.

Then the waitress never refilled our waters, and on paying, I pushed the button for "print receipt", and she never brought it to me.

The table legs were also extremely sticky, which was weird.

I have been coming to the Barley Mill for 15+ years. I love it here. I use to bring my son here when he was growing up. We could come in together during happy hour, and play a game of cribbage and enjoy a meal. I always loved that as a single parent I could come here with my kid and enjoy him and feel like an adult. Now that my son has left home I still come here. Often times it is the meet up spot my son, his wife and I pick to get together in town. I also have enjoyed the patio with my pup countless times. The patio is always open, there is always shade and it is heated. The staff knows me, but my pup is who they look to say hi to. Great place, great food, great staff.
