THE BULGARIAN JOB — Restaurant in Portland

I think that like a lot of Americans, my grasp of eastern European geography is a little weak. So imagine my confusion when I strode into my neighborhood food cart pod (60th & NE Halsey - check it out) to see the newly arrived Bulgarian Djob cart. My Cold War trained memory couldn't recall if I liked Bulgaria or not.

I kinda think I do now - or at least I'm sure that I like Bulgarian food. I had the kebabche and boy was it tasty, with flavor combinations that you just don't often encounter. I don't know what's in it, but it's good n

I'll be working my way through their menu over the next few weeks and telling all my friends about it....

This is my second time eating a chicken doner kebab from this cart and their doner kebabs are PHENOMENAL. 10/10 for flavor, and far better than the doner I have had at another doner cart in Portland in a different cart pod off of Killingsworth. The folks at this cart really make every component of the doner have a delicious flavor and texture. Plus they add crispy fries to it! The chicken is so delicious and savory, and the doner has thin slices of pickled cucumber in it for a sour tangy crunch, and also there is a delicious lemony/garlicky yogurt sauce on it too. It’s been awhile since I’ve wanted the same meal twice in a row but man do I wish I had another doner kebab to eat for dinner right now…

The chicken was oh so juicy, extremely flavorful from the array of spices, smothered in a garlicky yogurt sauce, and perfectly complemented by the cool crunch of thinly-sliced cucumber and onion. Imagine all of that deliciousness stuffed into essentially a warm, massive pita and you’ve got yourself a hefty handful of heaven. Just don’t forget the napkins!

Portions are generous and all the djobs come with a side of zingy, delicious, dill-loaded potato salad. I cannot wait to return ASAP & try all the other meat...
